Cruising Range

My 2014 T4R is 6 months old. SR5 Premium edition.

The first 4 months when I filled up the tank, the cruising range read 390-395 miles every time, and I was getting about 380-390 per tank.

For the past 2 months it reads 335-340 cruising range, and I've been getting about 340.

I figured it would improve again after the 5k service, but it did not. What's driving the lower MPG? Is it the colder temps?

My 07 FJ Cruiser got the same miles per tank throughout the year.

Colder temps, winter driving, warming up/more idling, tire pressure drops due to temp drops, less hwy driving, more butane/other stuff in winter blend fuel, different fill levels, different gas pump cut offs, heavier right foot - all pretty much normal.

Having owned my truck for thirteen months now, (and thus made it through a cycle of winter gas) I'm convinced that the mileage on the '14's and 15's is not as good as the 10-13 models.

I am averaging 16.8 over the course of thirteen months, while under the same conditions, my 2010 SR5 averaged around 19 m.p.g. I can't account for the change, given that the drivetrain is identical, and I refuse to believe that the '14 is that much less aerodynamic than the '10. The only thing I can think of is perhaps the shift points. I find myself upshifting manually fairly frequently, as the vehicle has a tendency to hold a lower gear on downhill grades.

FWIW, there are some '14-'15 owners that are getting better mileage on this site and on fuelly.com, but I live in hilly WV, so there's really no getting around it. I still haven't taken a straight interstate trip to see if the truck will get the advertised highway mileage. My guess is that it's going to hit 19 or maybe 20 - that's it.

All the above are exactly right. Probably 75% of my miles are long distance highway, usually trips that take a whole tank. My trip computer usually gives me anywhere between 350-380 miles. Also noticed that if your patient and careful you can fit at least another gallon after the auto-shutoff. Just go very slowly and listen for the bubbling sound to know when your getting to the top. Got good at this with my diesels and the foaming of that fuel.

Maybe vary the stations you fill up at more??

I managed to get the avg. on the computer to read out 26 mpg over a 100 mile round trip to and from Houston last week. That avg has come down now that I've been driving more city miles (20.5 now).

It's all about how you drive it, and the conditions around you.

I've never paid too much attention to the distance to empty readout. There is going be gas left over at 0. I would pay more attention to the fuel consumption readout and gauge your mileage based on the volume of the tank. If your tank is 23 gallons and the computer says you are getting 20mpg... 400 miles would obviously be doable but you would want to find gas very soon to account for computer consumption error. After you do a few fillups and record your consumption "manually," you will become pretty good at knowing what's left in the tank and what kind of mileage you are actually getting in certain driving conditons.

I'm averaging 16 on my '15... Expected a lot better. In reality I don't really care but it did get my attention, I thought I'd be close to my old tacoma which got 18-19...but I didn't buy this truck thinking fuel savings.

My 14 with stock tires/ wheels would get 21. That's practically back roads and the matches trace to work, which only has 50 mph speed limit. With new wheels and p rated 285's I was getting a hair over 18, which I moved and no longer travel trace to work, so that's at 70 mph. Now with winter blend the best I can get is 16.5
