Awesome. This will also help when doing my install. Now just looking forward to the pics that [MENTION=101555]nitrag[/MENTION] has for clarification on the antenna hook up and I should be good to go!

Its a really simple process... Pull out the old and start matching up colors/labels. I am partially color blind and i managed to make it happen. I installed a very similar pioneer to yours and it was very straightforward.

BTW, just want to add that Crutchfield customer support rocks! I called them several times and they very patiently walked me through a couple of issues I was having. The nicest thing about them from a customer service standpoint is that after you call them the first time, they will store your phone number so if you call again they don't have to say "what radio do you have? What vehicle do you have?" and so on. They already know it.

I will definitely be buying my next stereo from Crutchfield and installing it myself.

The solid blue does go with the solid blue wire. My mistake assuming a power antenna was a motorized antenna that moved up and down. The blue with white stripe is for an amplifier connection.

So just for clarification, hooking up the power Antenna is just soldering the power antenna wire on the head unit harness to the antenna wire on the metra vehicle harness?

Yes the blue wire that says power antenna on your HU harness connects to the metra blue wire which is connected to your factory harness.

Ok guys, my AVH-x8500BHS head unit will be here tomorrow so I wanted to get some things figured out so I can start to get my wiring harnesses ready.

So far, what I have are:

-Pioneer AVH-X8500BHS
-Axxess Metra ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface
-Metra 95-8202 Toyota DDIN Multi Dash Kit
-Metra 70-1761 Radio Wiring Harness For Toyota 87-Up
-MicroBypass Parking Brake Override Bypass
-USB/3.5mm AUX Extension Cable

I am a complete amateur at car audio :redface: and this will be my first install so I wanted to get some things clarified.

I know our 4runners have a power antenna and understand to hook it up I take my blue antenna wire from my metra wiring harness and connect it to the blue/white wire on the back of the head unit. However, since I am installing a microbypass on the unit, the microbypass blue wire is supposed to go to the blue/white wire on the back of the head unit. The remedy people have come up with that I have read in other threads is to wire the power antenna wire on the metra wiring harness to the yellow wire (acc constant power). Here is where I am confused...

Am I supposed to:
-wire the blue antenna wire from the metra wiring harness to the yellow ACC wire on the metra wiring harness
-wire the blue antenna wire from the metra wiring harness to the yellow ACC wire on the back of the head unit
-wire the blue antenna wire from the metra wiring harness to the yellow ACC wire on the metra wiring harness as well as the yellow acc wire on the back of the head unit (for a total of three wires in one connection)?

If its from crutch field there is really nothing to it. pull old stereo put new one in. they send you everything you need for the wiring harness and for the power antennas and what not.

When i put mine it in was match the colors, connect adaptor to antenna and put it all back together took maybe 15 minutes from start to finish

Actually why would you connect your blue/ white to your power antenna? the blue/white is your control wire for turning on and off of a amp.

Blue to blue and blue/white go to the control wire on a amp if you have a after market one.

Every wire is labeled on the new stereo harness just connect them. Follow the exact direction on the install sheet they provide you and tell you what connects to what.

If i am not mistaken could be wrong since its been awhile the power antenna is yellow with black stripe. read the instructions tho all your questions will be answered for you there

It doesn't matter you connect the yellow wire on the metra harness to your stereo acc yellow making it one line tap the blue in if thats what it saying solder the three together and enjoy doesn't matter where on the line it is

Think of the metra harness as a middle man like a drug dealer

Dealer supplies the seller which connects the buyer IN your case the stereo is the dealer the metra harness is the seller and the factory wiring is the buyer

Stereo >>>>>>metra harness<<<<< factory wiring

All the metra harness does is connects the two for you

Stereo harness >>>>> sodered to metra harness >>>>>>plugs into factory wiring

You're thinking way to far ahead of yourself and you dont even have the stereo yet again wait till you get it then follow the red bold type all the answer will be at your finger tips


BTW if you look hard enough you can find the pioneer factory code aka how to get into the program mode and deactivate the parking break issue without going thru the whole micro crap and wiring in extra things. Tho its not gong to be a easy find :O)

The blue and white wire is for an amplifier if you are installing one.

I took the green line for the video bypass and just grounded it. I attached it to one of the bolts that hold the radio in place. No problem with playing DVD's or messing with the NAV while driving.
I use the Kenwood dnx890hd unit and not the Pioneer unit.

Do it correctly unless you are going to use a amp leave that control wire alone. you could have just purchased a 4 prong relay connected the parking brake pink to it and then ground it out.

I have a pioneer and I simply followed the paper work and then added the the relay for watching movies that was until of course I met someone that worked for pioneer who gave me the factory code for programming it. at that point I went in and removed the relay capped off what isn't used and while in there connected the backup camera.

Just saying i rather do it the way Professionals in the field would do it rather then following a thread on a car forum. Granted there are ALOT of knowledgable folks here, granted it may work BUT the key word for line for me was I FOUND THE WORK AROUND. Not sure way they were having a antenna issue but I can say I didn't and I have the same truck and brand of stereo

I have been unfortunate enough to have a car catch on fire due to a faulty HID harness and also was in a holiday inn that had water dripping on the hot wire inside the wall which caught fire inside of my room had it not been for the dog waking me up it may have been to late in either case its not a very pleasant feeling.

So I learned I don't **** with electric and do it according to the every day professionals in that particular field. It eliminates me from the problem and makes them responsible in the end granted the car stereo is low voltage.

As far as the steering wheel adaptor sorry cant help they are a PIA, add way more wires inside the dash then needed and they are a SOB to program. I don't see a point to needing the stereo wheel controls when I have the remote for the stereo right next to me and the actual stereo half a arm reach away.

BTW is you decide to add a back up cam you need a REVERSED IMAGE camera otherwise the image with be backwards aka right will be left and vice versa its pioneers way of screwing people

[MENTION=70867]Code2[/MENTION] I am installing this Saturday. Soldered up my harness yesterday so I am ready to go. Have you installed a backup cam before? My pioneer head unit has the ability to view the camera while driving but I am unsure how to wire it. I know there is a reverse signal wire on my pioneer harness (light purple/white). I am not sure if I am supposed to wire that to my reverse wire as well as wiring my camera power to the reverse wire or what. I looked in the head unit manual but did not find any info on wiring the camera. I am not installing a camera right now but will probably do so in the near future and would like to be able to view while driving for towing purposes. I have seen others install a switch in the dash but I would rather use the function in my head unit. Thoughts?

I think I figured it out....

Wire camera power to ACC wire to receive power when car is turned on.
Wire Black to ground.
Wire light purple/white wire to reverse wire.

This way the head unit controls when the camera comes on. If camera button on my head unit is switched to off, the camera only comes on when in reverse.. Turns off when gear comes out of reverse..
If camera button on my head unit is switched to on, they camera is on all the time.

Now I need to determine where the closest place to tap into the reverse wire would be. I have seen the youtube video of the install on a 4runner and they used the wire under the driver side door jam kick plate.

[MENTION=70867]Code2[/MENTION] do you recall what color wire it was you used? On a backup cam install video on an 06 4runner I have seen on YouTube, I believe it was a red/yellow wire.
