Custom Exhaust Questions

So I've got a guy in Knoxville, TN, that has agreed to make me a custom exhaust for my 4th gen 4R for $300. And that's for headers all the way through to a Magnaflow muffler/catalytic converter. Crazy cheap, I know... I've had the guy do work on the Jeep I previously owned and it was fantastic.

My questions are in sound vs performance. My contact has given me a few options as to pipe sizing. He said 2.5" exhaust would be the highest performance, but I am afraid that would that cause too much noise My goal is to have much higher performance and less restriction on the exhaust without gaining "too much" noise. I don't mind a little rumble and more noise, but not like the obnoxious guy that drives down my street every day.

Would 2.25" pipes be the perfect medium in performance vs. sound between 2.5" (his suggestion) and the 2" (factory)? Would 2.5" be way too loud, almost not worth it? Will 2.25" offer much better performance over the factory?

Any advice/tips from your experience is appreciated.

Could always chop and weld a resonator in to subdue some noise if it's not to your liking, but it'll push you over the $300.00 initial budget.

I've used Vibrant resonators on past builds with great success. Worked to kill interior exhaust drone and tone down the noise.
 
Wow, is this something he could make and sell? I would be interested in buying one for sure if that were the case
 
Assuming it's a 6, 2.5" would be a good streetable size.
Just ditching the factory muffler for an aftermarket will make it louder.
But as ZebRuaj said you could always add a resonator.
I used a smaller bullet style one from summit. Cheap and kept the "loud" out and the deep tone in.
3" would sound like ass on a stock 6 (my opinion) not to mention the loss of back pressure.
 
My guy said that he's only interested in doing local business. The place is called Kar Kare, it's a family owned/run business that's going on its third generation of management. They service all makes/models, but specialize in exhaust setups. They did a really great job, I was really impressed with their craftsmanship.

So I had them do the work last week, and I have a few pics in the link on my signature. We ended up going with doing the y-pipe through the tail pipe. If I remember correctly we had the exhaust in the y-pipe sized at 2.25", then 2.5" through the muffler and on out. Told them to keep all the components as high and tight as possible to avoid dinging it up on trails -- they nailed it. Also had them make a side ported exhaust, which looks really clean. Everything (magnaflow, custom pipes, etc) ended up around $300.

The next day I decided that it was a bit too loud, so I had him chop in a resonator for $50. Definitely helped out the sound.

Tastes differ... I did a great search to find a muffler that would make louder and more aggressive noise, compared to the OE...
