CV axle clunks over bumps excessive play at front diff

How much lateral play is normal on the front diff to the CV axles? Over the past year, I have started hearing clunking over potholes. Have had the suspension gone over.
I replaced CV axles due to torn boot. When doing so, noticed the CV axles had a lot of play at the differential, and can simulate the same clunking sound.
This truck has been dead quiet prior to that. Its driving me batty.
Any tips on what needs replacing to tighten the tolerances back up to normal?

Did you ever figure out the clunk? My Driver side CV seems to have more play than normal. I added lift of about 2 1/2" and that's when the clunk started. I have gone through every bolt and joint and cannot figure out my clunk!!!

me too, I replaced my drivers side CV axle 9in my 2003 4runner SR5 due to old torn boot and needed a new cv and after install and torquing, a year later it has more forward and back play when you go under car and grab the bar and push/pull it. The passenger side has a tiny bit of play. The driver has twice that or more (millimeters of movement). It seems a tad excessive but it might be normal.

Toyota is going to check it since my car is at the dealer getting other services and ill see what they say and report back here.

Anyone know if the drivers side cv is supposed to have more play that passenger side and if this is normal? Theres no issue in driving. just worries me that my install of a CV that came from a out of state Toyota dealer might have been a cheap crappy part. It did not match the look of the old one but it was a Toyota brand part in a Toyota box. It was expensive as hell at $690 dollars and some places charged $1K for it at the time.

Just replaced both cv axles and hubs/bearings in my '03 Limited w/used lower mileage 5th gen cv's I bought off ebay and they feel great. Paid less than $125/ea.
