CV Axle Help!!!

Hi I've got a 4wd 2006 4runner and am replacing the CV axles as my boots tore. Got the axle out but can't get the new one in (or the old one back in for that matter). The axles just goes in til the spindles and won't go any further. Is there some sort of trick to this, or something special with 4wd? Thanks again doesn't seem like it should be this hard.

Did you try "bumping" the CV axle into the differential? They have a ring on the end usually and you have to shove or tap the end with a mallet to get them to pop in sometimes.

Or are you talking about the spline going through the hub?

Grease it up good and make sure C-clip opening is facing up.

Also make sure you didn't destroy the side seals, if you did they'll slide in too far.

Once the splines line up put a cold chisel or big flathead screwdriver on one of the notches on the inner housing, tap it with a small sledge, don't hammer on it just light taps with a heavy hammer and it slides right in!

I cannot for the life of me get the new one in. Old one came out so easy but no matter how hard I try new one will not go into the differential. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. All the videos I watch it seems like it just slides back in easily

Rotate it until the little metal ring lays flat in that groove in the splines. If that little bastard is sticking up, she won’t go in. The gap on the ring has to go up I think?

Screw around with it. Rotation while tapping has always worked for me.

Then get a prybar and a BFH, put the prybar tip in that groove they showed you above, and give it some firm taps. Should go right in.

Can definitely take some force to pop the ring in but before you drive yourself crazy make sure you've got the right part. And not a shitty brand.
 
A small dab of grease along the metal ring to hold it in place helps a lot. Also, be sure you are straight and nothing is in your way. If you line it up right, it can be seated by hand with a strong push by hand.
 
Sidebar: Make sure you have the right part as [MENTION=84389]wshiverick[/MENTION] mentioned. Ive had good luck w the car quest brand, but the last one I purchased was a hair too long, made it very hard to get the spindle mated up, and was binding as I rotated the wheel after it was back together. Bought a Toyota reman from the dealer and it works fine. $140 is not cheap but other reman companies do have fitment issues once in awhile. So with both wheels in the air rotate them several times to make sure they spin with no binding after reassembly. Good Luck!
 
I've had good luck with woldpacs feq brand that's pretty inexpensive and O'Reilly's import direct if you have to go to a store to get it.
 
Thanks everyone for the advice! Got it in with another set of hands and a 12” chisel. I used the ones from 1aauto.com and the fit was perfect

Hi all. I’m new to the forum. I’m replacing both CV axles in my badly rusted 08 Limited that had close to 180k on it and noticed a discrepancy inside the differential. The driver side seems to have a smooth metal shaft lying horizontally inside (see pic), while the passenger side is just an empty housing. Is this by design or am I dealing with a larger issue?

I THINK you're seeing a cross shaft that is part of the internal gear set, so don't think it's a worry. Someone with more front diff knowledge will chime in I'm sure.

What you're seeing is the differential from the drivers side. The cv axle interfaces directly with differential. Because the diff is offset to the drivers side, the passenger side requires an intermediate axle/stub shaft. It plugs into the passenger side and extended the housing outward. This is why you're not seeing the same thing on the opposite side.
