cv boot and bearng damage

This weekend I was taking my 4Runner to get an alignment and they found that the cv boot was torn. Along with the alignment work it was recommended that the idler arm be replaced as well as both cv axles and boots, and the bearings repacked. I couldnt get the work done and decided to put it off later. I put over 400 miles on my 4Runner in a three day period. I did experience quite a bit of shimmying in the front end during my driving. Last night I heard a lot of rattling on the driver side axle.
The cv boot is torn and upon further investigation the cage assembly that secures the bearings is broken and the bearings have fallen out. Its still drivable but the cage is rattling around the axle and its a little loud. How long can I drive the vehicle like this? I have to get it to a shop. Will the axle fall off? Here's a picture.

There is a Toyota Service Campaign to replace the idler arm, and an alignment is included.

If you have manual or auto hubs make sure they're unlocked, that way the front axles won't even be turning.

Get them replaced soon.

Thanks Fourwd. I have been hearing about that campaign. I will have to find out more about it.
My only concern now is if it would be safe for me to drive this thing the 16 miles to the shop. I belive that I have auto hubs.

If you're in 2WD and hubs unlocked, the CV's/axles shouldn't even be turning, so no problem.
If they are turning there's another problem.

And FWIW, both CV's on my Maxima are way worse and I've been driving 30 mi a day, 3 days a week for months. :biggrin2:

HAHAHA! Thanks, I was actually able to get it to a shop about 15 miles away, but I had to take all back streets which I didnt think was possible in San Diego. The truck drove fine except for some noise, but Im not aware of the hazards that could come about by driving it with the cv in that condition. Im $233 poorer but I feel safer. Thanks for your input.
