CV Boot Clamp - can i zip tie it?

Hi Guys,

I just rebooted my factory cv axles. I messed up the outer CV clamp (closest to hub), so i replaced it with a generic Autozone clamp, which is now leaking like a sieve.

My question is: Would I be OK replacing it with a steel zip tie (which i could do without removing the axle), or should i yank the axle and install a new toyota clamp?

I haven't used those steel zip ties before but I would assume they need a tool (maybe just pliers?) to tighten them properly. If you have the tool I would think they would get plenty tight. You can also use a worm style hose clamp.

Looking at the axle installed in the spindle, i think the worm drive housing would smack into my LBJ mount bolts

I don't see why you couldn't. Just don't use the screw clamps (because those will loosen, or interfere with something), or plastic zip ties that are not UV rated (because they'll break down).

I used an autozone steel ziptie on my inner boot for a period of time. i put a normal plastic zip tie over it to ensure that it wouldn't catch on anything.

Held fine until i caught some rope during an offroad venture and it ripped the boot to shreds.

I did a little more research on the steel zip ties, and apparently it's really hard to get them tight enough since the locking grooves have some (albeit very small) space in between them.

I think i'm going to stack a black ziptie on top of the crappy autozone CV clamp, until i can get a new toyota clamp crimped on.

Hopefully the zipe tie lock clears the exposed threads of the 4 UBJ mount bolts. I would guess there's less than a 1/2" of clearance.

i have a Stainless Steel clamp from west marine. Its perfect. Just use a screw driver or a socket. its SS but it cost a arm and a leg for a clamp from West Marine lol
