CV play? Normal?

Hi all,

The CV's on my 98 are not firmly held in the front diff. Meaning, I can grab the section closest to the diff, push and pull it in and out about an 1/8-1/4 inch. Is that normal? Can the snap rings fail or is it possible that whoever replaced them last didn't put the snap rings on? I have intermittent highway steering wheel vibrations, feels like unbalanced tires but it comes and goes.

The CV Spindles that go into the diff and into hub of your should be a soild connection, they should not slip in and out. The shaft that travels between diff and hub connection is set on bearings to allow for articulation as the wheel travels.

So that being said you should definitely see if the snap ring has failed. I dont think this would be the cause of any vibration you are feeling though IMO.

Thanks for the confirmation. It just didn't seem right. I'm gonna get some snap rings, pull'em out and check. The reason I thought it might be contributing to the vibrations is that when the cv is in its out position there is lots of play up and down and side to side. When i push it back in its seems a lot more solid. I will post my results.
