CV question

I'm a shade tree mechanic at best so I want to be sure my thinking is right.

So I just pulled my CV axle (drivers side). Visual inspection reveals nothing. It seems like it is fine. I'm under the impression that it is broken.

When I broke it I was climbing a rock stair case. After it broke, I would hear a clunk in the axle (drivers side) every couple seconds as I drove with it. Once I released the manual hubs I could drive fine in 2WD. I reached underneath with the hubs released and could not turn the drivers side axle, but I could turn the passenger side.

That means it is the axle and not anything in the diff right?

I could remove the boot and inspect the joint, but what would I be looking for?

Turn the cv to an angle (about 45*) then turn the cv in your hands. Does it bind up or make any weird grinding noises? If it turns smoothly then you should be fine. I haven't done any real offroading in mine yet so I haven't had the pleasure of doing what you're doing. All I have done in my runner is little trail runs on dirt. Dirt will give before a cv does :)

Don't worry, plenty of rocks for you to break your rig on when you get here. Going out to the garage to look.

Did I mention that I just broke my sway bar link? Just wanted to move it out of the way and snapped the bolt. That puts me to at least 12 broken bolts since I started my build.

And you still had your sway bar because...??? haha, I took mine out a LONG time ago! As long as you don't try and race around corners you don't need the sway bar. Toyota put those in because soccer mom's don't know how to drive :lookout:

As for me going to Colorado... the odds are about 50/50 right now. I'm pending assignment to Ft Rucker in Alabama. I guess the unit that I would go to in Colorado is doing a reset and getting rid of a lot of their guys so it's hard for me to get an assignment there. However, my Sergeant Major (the highest ranking enlisted guy in my unit) is trying to hook me up with an assignment to Ft Carson so there is still hope. :)

Ok, starting to think the problem might be in the manual hub. Inspected the CV and it seems to turn and articulate just fine. I slipped the hub on the end with it set to free and it doesn't spin. It should right?

If I am holding the hub in my hand and it is set to free, I should be able to reach in and turn the splines freely right? If I switch it to lock, nothing should move?

last time i heard an ifs clunk like your explaining...it was the front diff, gears were toast, try drain your fluid and see if you got chunks of metal...

Yeah I snapped my sway bar bolts the other day when I was doing the ball joint spacers. Durned bolts broke on BOTH sides, so out came the sway bar. I honestly notice no difference unless I try to take a corner at 30 mph.

Can you post up some pictures of the inside of your hub and maybe explain what the CV is doing in picture form. I just took mine all the way apart a few days ago and I might be able to help but I am dumb and like to see pictures

Done messing with it tonight. In the morning I'm going to put the ADD hubs back on and see if it works. If so, I will know the problem is in the hub. If not I willtry another axle and see if that is it.

There were no chunks when my front ran dry and froze up - just the sickening screech of both front tires locked up at 40 mph on pavement. :(

I'm shooting in the dark here, FoG, but the CV should spin freely with hubs unlocked, and normally when a hub breaks it strips out and won't lock, not the other way around. And on top of that, I can't think of anything that would clunk in the hub if it did break.

If the CV really is good, I fear you've got diff issues.

Had a moment of clarity this morning and figured out why the hub wasn't working properly. It is now fixed. Going to put my spare CV on in a bit and we'll know for sure if it is a CV issue or a diff issue. 100% sure that it is not a hub issue. Gonna buy new bolts to replace the studs as soon as Lowes opens.

If something was busted in the diff would one axle be able to spin freely (passenger) while the other is seemingly frozen or clunking in motion (drivers)?

Yup. Spun bearing, busted gear, lotsa reasons. Remember that the whole purpose of the diff is to allow the shafts to rotate at different speeds...

Good luck, man, here's hoping it's just the CV!
