Daily drive with 35’s?

What’s your experience with it? Most stuff I read people have it with 35s as their weekend toy.

Most concerned about steering (rack, temps, tie rods) wearing out pretty fast.
I also tow a cargo trailer 5+ hours a few times in the summer for camping trips (have a giant trucool 4590 tranny cooler already)

I have 4.88 gears, firewall is fully tubbed already (I like to get after it and the pinch weld/hammer trick didn’t solve all of my problems so I went for it).

I have some konig countersteer 16x8 wheels on the way (19.2 pounds per wheel). Debating 33’s or 35’s with the Yokohama mt g003.

Opinions?

What's the draw for you for 35's? Does it allow you to do certain trails that 33's don't? Is it purely for aesthetic reasons? Some things to think about, only you can answer them. We can't tell you how to build your rig, since each one is unique and you know it better than anyone.

The biggest issue with upsizing the tires is rubbing, which you've already handled. Just had a co-worker go through that, put on 35's and they rubbed like crazy. He hated it so much he returned the tires and bought 33's but not after a big runaround from the shop. Power and handling ability (raising the center of gravity) becomes more of an issue the bigger you go. 4.88's are better suited for 33's and 5.29's for 35's so it'll be sluggish if you do go with 35's. But that may not matter at all to you, only you can make that call.

35's just look so clean though, I'm always asking myself the same question as well. Ended up going with 33's as I daily my rig but whenever I see one in the wild with 35's I instantly question my decision.

I daily drove mine for a while before quarantine without problems. Go for it and upgrade as needed when/if things wear. But I have not seen anything abnormal on mine.

They just delivered my Yoko M/Ts the other day and just by the looks of it it seems like a great tire. I looked at a lot of videos on the tube and no one seems to not like the tire.

Not to get off-topic, but wouldn’t another issue be having stock gearing? I ask as an honest question because I had thought about going from 265’s to 285’s and one of the points I saw someone make on here was just how much more sluggish things would be if I only upgraded the tires.

Snow would be my main advantage with 35's. I like to get pretty adventurous in the winter time. The 4.88's is concerning, which led me to picking a light wheel and possible tire. My brother runs method 306 and falken mt in 35 and his combo is 100lb per wheel tire. And my set up would be 88 pounds per tire with the same size. Part of me thinks that'll make up for it. But then I read its about mass/rolling resistance and not as much unsprung weight. Its tricky for me lol

In this situation (35's being so big and tough to clear) you wouldn't be able to even drive without taking care of the rubbing, meaning gears are a secondary priority. 285's can fit pretty easy with use of a hammer to the pinch weld.
They are sluggish with 285's, but a lot of people run it that way regardless. I hate lugged/sluggish performance so I got 4.88's and I am very happy that I did. I also live by decent sized hills and tow, which also makes gears extra important to me.

I’d say go for it since you have already handled the hard parts. I don’t daily drive it but I’m in the process of trimming for 35’s right now, planning on going 5.29’s in the very near future. I’d bet 4.88’s would be fine, I’m running on stock gearing (4.30 I think? 2000 limited elocker) and it’s sluggish but doable. You also maybe a few mph off the gauge cluster so it might seem a bit more sluggish than it actually is. Are you sure you trimmed enough? I was surprised how much I had to cut the firewall to not rub at full lock/full bump (I removed the coilover).

I did a pretty aggressive tub. No messing around with barley clearing the tires. I put on my brothers 35’s with 17x8.5 0mm methods and I had a comfortable amount of space at the firewall. I also cut the fender and trimmed the flares some. Possibly more flare cutting may be needed but it’s one of those things I didn’t want to cut too much.

I’ve been eyeing Fb marketplace for a cheaper set of 35’s to give a try for a couple weeks. It’s a big investment for something I’m not 100% convinced on lol

Ah ok, I got ya. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I’m running 265’s and have been since I got my 2000 about 4 years ago. Of course lurking on this forum has caused me to consider upgrades and whatnot and for a while I was set on going to 33’s until I read about the sluggishness with stock gears. Already with my 265’s I’m not exactly a speed demon so I can’t imagine bogging it down even more. They sure look nice but it’s my DD so I’ve gotta try and keep some common sense (even though it’s hard sometimes) lol. Appreciate the info!

Bigger tires definitely look alot cooler. If you have the money to regear and/or maybe supercharge it, I'd say go for it.

I was more on a budget plus didn't want to get too involved in a build. I daily drive my 3rd gen and a modified mazdaspeed 3, trying to balance funds between the two of them is tough lol.

In regards to the g003 tires. I have them, they get me through hunting trails, fishing areas, and the light offroading I do without any trouble.

I get compliments on the tires often, which partially is from toyota guys that like my build, and partially from the aggressive look of the tire.

I plan on replacing my wifes k02's with the g003 when she is due for tires on her 5th gen. They are awesome.

Ah ok, I got ya. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I’m running 265’s and have been since I got my 2000 about 4 years ago. Of course lurking on this forum has caused me to consider upgrades and whatnot and for a while I was set on going to 33’s until I read about the sluggishness with stock gears. Already with my 265’s I’m not exactly a speed demon so I can’t imagine bogging it down even more. They sure look nice but it’s my DD so I’ve gotta try and keep some common sense (even though it’s hard sometimes) lol. Appreciate the info!

I threw common sense out the window a long time ago with my build. I hope to regear to 4.88 gears soon too but keep my tires the same size. Tire smoke for days.

Yeah I’m trying to find that fine line of ditching common sense but still being able to trust it on long hunting trips miles from no where haha

I've been running aggressive mud 295's which measure out to 34 inches for about a year - no downsides for me except for slightly more gas and road noise.

Upside is the truck looks the beans and is amazing on desert roads and the rocky bits.

Forgot to mention fully aware yours is a Gen3 & friend has a gen 3 with 285's and it looks great, and does well in the snow.

Something's wrong then. My '97 SR5 has been on 33's (285/75-16) for 44k miles and TEN years. Zero front end parts consumed in that time.

If you have 17s it may be worth looking into 34s (285/75/17). Tires are limited but its a good in between size and you don't get all the width of a 35. Did you tub using a 35 to check clearance?

I ran a 97 (3rz manual) on 35's as a dd for 3 years, half on stock gears and half on 4.88's. No issues, life was great...do it.
