Dash Cam Install

In this day and age, especially with all the crazy drivers out there, I'm seriously considering installing a dash cam in my 4R. I live a few miles from Los Angeles which is the hit and run capital of the US. I'm also not too far from a certain city where the majority race (don't ask me to disclose which race) all drive high end European cars around on city like it's the Autobahn. Anyways, I have a few cameras in mind but I'm looking for ideas on doing a clean install. If anyone has done one, please share. Thanks

I installed the Mobius with wide angle lens in my 2014 SR5 Premium.

The camera is hardwired into the fuse panel. I used an add a fuse plugged into one of the fuses that does not receive power when the ignition is off. The wire runs up behind the left side of the dash board and emerges at the base of the A pillar. I removed the plastic cover on the A pillar and then ran the wire up along the inside of the A pillar. You have to be careful of the side curtain airbag, but when the plastic cover is off, you can easily run the wire behind the rolled-up airbag.

I then hid the wire above the headliner at the top of the windshield. The wire comes up right above the rear view mirror.

The camera itself is mounted just left of center of the windshield. I fabricated a bracket that essentially hangs from my EZ Pass. I initially secured the camera to the bracket using heavy duty Velcro. The warm weather melted the Velcro adhesive so I am going to retrofit the camera mount with a plastic screw.

I'll add some pictures when I get back to my house tonight.
 
Get a Lucas Black Box. They are awesome...1080 HD, GPS, Impact Sensor, Microphone, Motion Sensor for Parking Mode.
I actually have 2....one forward looking and one looking out the rear window.

You can find them on fleabay...free shipping from South Korea.
 
been thinking about getting one too. there are commerical ones available like drivecam that can be linked to ECU and videos can be viewed remotely in real time. But i did see some made by cobra at target. they were pretty compact and had built in screen. think they were like 150 or so for the larger one.
 
I have been debating installing cameras on the car for some time now. Looking at the Lukas 2CH black box might speed up that decision for my truck and daily driver.
 
I have 3 cameras in mind:

1) DOD TECH LS460W
2) AVIC View-i HD Single Lens
3) AVIC View-i HD Dual Lens

All three have GPS and the ability to record while the car is off w/o killing the battery. For me looks play a big role and these cameras look nice. They can be mounted up pretty high above the mirror so no thug will see it and be tempted to break in to steal it. The 3rd option is nice because it has a rearward facing lens in addition to forward facing lens. A lot of cameras I've seen do not have continuous loop recording which to me is a big deal. I found a site called The Dash Cam Store and they sell kits that enable the hard wiring of a camera w/o having to use the cigarette lighter.

yes, that is why i really like this.

i'm running an older dashcam i got from another site and it's quite bulky and looks like a radar detector.

so, i like the thought of very small cams running both front and rear.

they give enough cable length and install should be pretty easy.

also, running this older model... i feel i need to have one in every car now.

I also have an android phone mounted in such a way that the front facing camera sees me and the window, and I have an app called Secret Video Recorder. When it's recording the screen is blank so you can't tell it's recording.

The DVR camera sits nicely behind the rear view mirror, it doesn't block my view at all. I have it connected semi permanently. There are some nice features, like G sensor and manual save.

I caught this on a cheap $18 camera in my pickup truck...sometimes I really wonder if people are actually this stupid, or if they're deliberately trying to get into an accident?

I installed in on my 2015.

I mounted it behind the mirror, using the mirror's power to power it. I did all the connections under the upper console. The only part of the cord you see is 3" of the USB cable. If you're interested in doing this, the blue us the positive and white is negative.

How does the rear camera connect to the front camera? Is it wired or wireless? Does it use a composite connection? I'm thinking I could maybe split my current reverse cam wire and connect to this.
