If you want an actual dashcam, I think a GoPro isn't what you're looking for. If you want something that will begin recording when you turn the vehicle on, or when movement is detected then you want a dashcam. A dashcam will record and store memory on a loop. I have a Livue LB100, and it's pretty nice. I used it during my cross country trip. You can find the link in my signature.

JUST an FYI.
I have tried 4 dash cams up until now. one cheap ebay one, one go-pro, one expensive ebay one, and now JAEWONCNC IROAD IONE-3800FU.
this thing is awesome, it has GPS, auto on, automatic accident detection, its plug and play, and best of all its small and designed to operate in 140 degree Texas sun.
I bought it because my wife works for state farm, and accident faking is making a huge comeback in the US.
imagine this... (remember TX is a no-fault state) you pull up to a light behind some dirt bag. the light is red, and you come to a stop. dirt bag throws his car in reverse and slams into you.... now dirt bag gets out and claims you ran into him. meanwhile dirt bag #2 in the car next to you says he saw it all, and you ran into dirt bag #1.....you are a law abiding citizen and cannot just beat the truth out of the dirt bags...now you have a 50/50 shot of getting out of this unscathed. OR you buy a GOOD dash cam, ($200-$300) mount it to your dash, and forget about it. now dirt bag tries to pull scam, you play along until the police show up, and produce the dash cam...you win...Level Dick Tracy.
In the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) area this has been reported 11 times in the last 18 months...thats state farm alone. who knows how many for all providers, not to mention how many in the US.
My wife insisted on a dash cam when she got her first call about this in Feb.

I have a gopro hero 3 white that I'll be shooting a timelapse of Oklahoma to Colorado tomorrow, then we have 5 passes I'll be shooting time lapse of this next week. Medano Pass, Ophir Pass, Imogene Pass, Engineers Pass, Cinnamon Pass.
GoPros are the easiest and I control it from my iPhone via wifi.

i use autoguard pro (paid version) using my android phone (samsung galaxy s3)
another one i tried but didnt like was daily roads voyager.

edit : i did look into this http://www.dashcamusa.com/ but just afraid to spend the money on it when i can spend $5 for the app for the phone.

i work in downtown and those bicyclists very often do not care about rules. i saw some incidents already. plus i think it would be nice to have it there to catch some affording trips too.

Where did you buy the last one? I am interested in getting a couple for my cars and like the quality of the videos and I could hide it behind the mirror.

You can get them on eBay from Korea or from amazon. I used eBay. I can give you the seller name if you wish. There are several options. 8gb, 16gb, 32gb, with or without GPS, with or with out full time power adapter. They range from 180-225 for the same model depending on options.

I used a Korean dash cam (can't recall the brand) for about 18 months before it finally went tits-up. It was a great device while it lasted: dual channel (in cab and front view; SDHC compatible; GPS overlay; etc). They come in handy and are very low-maintenance. It's nice for a little bit of extra insurance.

I've been looking into these for a while too. I think it's a great idea to have something like this just for a little extra insurance.
Every time I start looking though I lose interest because no one seems to make a product that is small enough that I can hide. Also I have a problem spending over 150 on a foreign product that isn't made for the US like most of these are. This has got me looking again though...

Most phones today have 8mp+ cameras and record hours of 1080p video. Turn the phone sideways and hit record. It's extremely stable especially when mounted on the dash, not the windshield (windshield mount causes the phone to bounce due to gravitational forces pulling down).

It's quite a cheap investment too. If you want something fancier, sorry.

Haha true, but a division of toyota makes cars that are made for, and marketed towards the US. I'm fine with that. But when it comes to buying a product from another country that was never intended to be used by an English speaking user. I'm less inclined to pay a lot for it.

ya, there are so many car dash cameras on ebay and amazon, it is suggested to get a HD720P or HD1080P one at price around USD150, it is important to choose one with a great solution.
