My wife insisted on a dash cam when she got her first call about this in Feb.

WTF! I've never even heard of "accident faking". If that happened to me, I think I'd totally lose my shit and end up getting the crap kicked out of me by two dirtbags.

What rock you been under? This has been going on for ages!
I saw (a video) of a city bus in a true accident. You can see people who were not on the bus at the time of the hit get ON the bus acting like they were passengers feigning injury!
 
I've been using a cheapo ebay dash cam (bought 3, gave one to BIL) and it works well. I want a cheap one because I leave it in my Wrangler which is never locked and usually has top or doors off. The SD card is worth more than the Cam.

Is nice to have in the event of an "event." My son is driving now and am going to buy one for his car as a "teen boy driver" deterrent.

Would like one for my 4Runner, as noted, that I can fit behind the RV mirror.

Lol! I don't know man...I've been in Houston or Dallas for the last 10 years and have certainly witnessed my fair share of scumbaggery but I guess accident faking has escaped me; until now. Too bad, because the last thing I need is another reason to hate people.

Supposedly, something similar is very common in Russia (or whatever they call themselves now). Remember the giant meteor that went across the Russian sky several months ago, and how there were so many videos of it? The reason for all the videos was, everyone in Russia has a dashcam because people there will jump on your car hood and swear you hit them.

I either read it on the internet or a buddy told me, but either way, it has to be fact. Check this out: Russian scammers

It's mostly (if not always) just a scam against insurance companies to get money.

Like I posted before...I have tried several cameras and this one is titz above all the others in every way..

After seeing this thread, I became interested and started doing research on dashcams. I ended up getting the DOD ls400w which has amazing daytime quality. I haven't tested it at night yet, but so far I am really impressed.
 
Just about all vehicles have had some kind of event recording device for the last 10 years or so - if not longer. Included also is a tri-axial accelerometer. The data from the accel can tell from which direction the the impact came from. So you would be able to tell if you were the one hit or the one doing the hitting. So, in most cases this data would clear things up in court - not that it wouldn't be a pain and costly.

There were articles written when this ability of car computers was revealed years ago and again when the Progressive Insurance Snapshot ads came out. The issue was who had the rights to the data; and did it conflict with a persons rights against self incrimination. However, there is no problem with you volunteering your own data.

Another issue was that computers from accident vehicles were being downloaded from vehicles in wrecking yards. Your data is in someone elses hands without your knowledge, perhaps violating your rights. Aint technology great!
 
Does anyone know of a cam that has a voltage detection feature so it turns on with the car and starts recording (and then shuts off when the cur is turned off as well)? This seems like it should be a common feature but I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find one that advertises this. I know some can be set to turn off after a set time interval but I see no mention of an auto turn on feature.

I got the Lukas LK-1900ACE in the mail today from Amazon. It does exactly what you're asking about (assuming I'm reading it correctly). I chose this one based on the review at The Wirecutter (see section on "A Step Up") and for its purported high heat tolerance. Also, I wanted something I could hide behind the mirror so as not to be a distraction.
