Dash Cam

ran the following setup slightly different than the first video post.

FoV = 140
Contrast = auto
EV = 0
Quality =std

making some new ones at high quality (13mb instead of 9mb) and maybe going back to FoV = 160, but you get a weird fisheye effect turning left/right until you get back to straight. It could be me, but it freaks my eyes out watching the video at 160 instead of 140 FoV. also updated the firmware to the latest and the default contrast, ev and WDR (wide dynamic range) have been tweaked to show more in the dark.

first video shows highway complete darkness at around 10 min mark.

2nd video shows video as the sun is setting

Check out this resource for dashcam use.

Dash Cam Talk

If you want an actual dashcam, I think a GoPro isn't what you're looking for. If you want something that will begin recording when you turn the vehicle on, or when movement is detected then you want a dashcam. A dashcam will record and store memory on a loop. I have a Livue LB100, and it's pretty nice. I used it during my cross country trip. You can find the link in my signature.

DarkLord, off topic, but this guy knocking hands down gets the Creepiest Avatar award!

Just ordered the Lukas LK-7900, with Backup Battery. Can't wait to get it installed.
Wish I had this when some bonehead turned in front of me last July!!!!

have to add, do NOT upgrade the firmware from 6.2 to 6.6, the video recording completely changes. I had to downgrade back to a Russian 6.3 version (couldn't find a 6.2 version) and then figure out how to change the menu back to English.

the night time recording from the original firmware shows a darker black, while on 6.6 it washes out the black in night time.

edit : the Russian 6.3 fixed the blacks, but introduces purple streaks in dark areas. back to my quest.

edit 2 : reloaded 6.6, changed ev from -1 to +1 and that didn't resolve the blacks. now that 6.6 turned off the ability to change the WDR and contrast, it washed out the blacks to a beige tint.

Dash Cam App

i use autoguard pro (paid version) using my android phone (samsung galaxy s3)

another one i tried but didnt like was daily roads voyager.

here is a video i made during a bad winter day about 4 months ago.

AutoGuard 2013-03-18 Part 1 - YouTube

edit : i did look into this Dash Camera - SmartCam HD 2 | Your Video Eyewitness but just afraid to spend the money on it when i can spend $5 for the app for the phone.

Thanks for the great idea on installing an App instead of buying a Dash Cam. I've been researching some cheap dash cams but you can't beat a free app, right. I just installed iSymDVR2 dash cam app on my iPhone and I will test it out on my way home tonight. Thanks again, you saved me few bucks. :lookout:

Id chime in with the ones we use in our work trucks but they cost about 2500 a piece :whip2: not sure that would be something you want in your budget

BUT if you want you can go the cheaper route if you have a andriod smart phone

I.E i have the note 3 you can use dailyroads voyager its free and ad free runs in the back ground will overlay gps info speed etc

I tested it last night for giggles here is a screen shot from the video and yes its clear as hell on a night that isnt snowing and reflecting all kinds of light every where.

Recording in 1080p

Here is a shot from the other night off the work cam big difference in clarity. and for you eagle eyed people yes two axels of the truck broke off one was along the wall 400 ft from the truck and the other axel was 6 lanes over on the other side of the highway

for those that may be in the market for one, here are some new to market vico vation dash cams. I currently use the old TF2+ which the marcus-3 replaces. I am tempted to upgrade to the new marcus-3 and move my old TF2+ to the warden's Tacoma. if I do upgrade I will post a mini review.

Marcus-1

1080p 30fps HD Video and Audio Recording

Vicovation Marcus 1 1080p HD Dash Camera w/ GPS

Marcus-3

1296P 30FPS / 1080p 60fps HD Video and Audio Recording

Vicovation Marcus 3 1296p HD Dash Camera

the new vicovation dash cams are up on spytecinc and newegg.

marcus-3 for $260 (my recommendation)

marcus-1 for $199

I myself will be looking to upgrade to the marcus-3 and delegate my old TF2+ to the warden's Tacoma.

video of vicovation product line with day/night samples.

marcus-1
marcus-3
marcus-4 (new with 21:9 movie mode recording)
marcus-5 (dual cameras front/rear setup)

this is the same chipset and camera as the marcus-4 but in a different brand

marcus-4 night time

marcus-4 daytime

marcus-4 dark highway

marcus-4 bright to tunnel to bright

I love it, I waited a long time to get a dashcam because I wanted to get one I could install as part of the car, to capture something if it does happen, but for the most part to just work in the background. this one does the trick, I only drive the 4runner on the weekends usually, I have a company car. I will try to post some video from last weekend this week. So far I am very happy with it. I did a limited write up of what I was looking for and how this one met my requirements, link is in my signature (build thread), should be the last entry.
