Dash Click/Rattle

So with only 125 miles on it, my 4Runner has its first rattle. Its coming from somewhere on the pass side dash. I took everything out of the glovebox and even did the wire bundle clip trick under the dash but its still there. I sounds like it is coming from dash near the windsheild or the A pillar. I'm taking it in to be looked at by service dept this afternoon. Of the people that have had this problem and taking it in to be serviced what did the dealer do to fix it?

This took me several days to figure out. Check to see if your sun visor is seated in its retaining clip. I'd have sworn the noise was coming from inside the dash.

This is going to sound stupid but do you have anything in the side door cup holders? I have a rattle I get there a lot because I keep water bottles stocked in my doors.

Fixed it myself by turning up the music. Party mode FTW!!

I used to have a 2003 Tacoma. It developed a weird clicking/tapping noise that I was *sure* was coming from the passenger door, close to the speaker.

After a few trips to the dealer to shim the dash and fill the door cavity with some kind of expanding foam product, the ticking noise was still there. Despite our time and effort, couldn't figure out what it was.

The problem was ultimately determined to be a small wire wire under the seat rattling against the metal seat frame. Fixed it with a small piece of electrical tape.

My point is that the source of your rattle will be in the oddest place you can think of - farthest away from where you suspect.

Example: If your truck develops an weird noise in the tailgate, look under the battery tray for the answer. LOL

so my TR4 13 does have a click too, I half wonder if it is the windshield wipers moving around on the window.

I honestly have not tried to test this theory at all just what I think of when I hear it.

When I have bottles or soda cups in the center cup holders, and they are even a little sticky, they will make an annoying rattle. Also if anything, even a small piece of paper is in the space where the 4WD shift knob is, it will vibrate.

Sorry for the delay in updating everyone. The sunvisor trick didn't work but thanks for the advice on it. When I took the runner into the dealer they kinda blew it off as not a big deal and I was told its normal for new cars to "settle" for the first few hundreds miles. I told them fine and to document it so if it is still doing it at when it is time for the first oil change it can be address then as well. After leaving the dealer I ran by the audio shop that I have set up to start replacing the speakers in the runner. I mentioned the click and he rode with me to see where he thought it was. When we were going down the road he pushed on the pass speaker grill and as long as he had his hand there it stopped. He told me when he replaces the speakers in a week he would tinker with the grill area and see if he could figure out a way to stop the rattle/click. Going to work today the click was present the first few miles but stopped once the runner warmed up. It was in the mid 60's here in Raleigh NC this morning so maybe the difference in temp has something to do with the sound. The forecast is for 24 for a high tomorrow so I will update if the sound is worse tomorrow.

The cold has made the sound worse. I am taking it in to a local Toyota dealer in the morning. Also has anyone else had their tail lights on the 14s to get water inside them. Both of mine were fogged over on the inside from about midway to the top of the tail light? I took pictures for the dealer just in case the sunlight clears them today but hopefully isn't normal.

I have a similar rattle when going over bumps that comes from what sounds like the dash area...only apparent in the cold weather. Not sure if it's still there when it's warmer out, but I did just recently notice it.

Yes, I have the same problem with the tail light. I am taking mine in on Saturday.

My 2013 T4R SR5 has the same noise and it is driving me crazy. I hear it sporadically now; I do agree it seems worse when it is cold outside. I have pressed all over on the dash with no change. I am even thinking it could be the plastic between the hood and windshield by the windshield wipers. If you find the answer definitely let me know. I HATE RATTLES!! :frusty:

I know you said the noise might be coming from the dash, but check and see if this might be a possibility. The TSB info that I am going to post below might be outdated, actually I really hope it is. It's been out for a few years now, I would hope they would fix it with the most recent years.

T-SB-0141-10 Upper/Lower Windshield/Rear Glass Tick Noise
If a creak, tick, or rattle noise is heard at the top or bottom of the windshield, or at the top of the rear glass, the source of the noise may be the two stoppers bonded to the top of the windshield/rear glass, or the windshield retainers bonded to the lower edge of the windshield. This bulletin provides the recommended repair procedure to eliminate these types of noises from the windshield/rear glass area.


As for squeaks, any of the newer 4Runner's have the dead pedal squeak (left of the brake pedal) during the colder weather?

Thanks Mason my Runner in getting the replacement tail lights put in and I emailed them this TSB in the hope this will solve my clicking sound. It is in the mid 50s here today and the sound was less noticable on the drive in. I truly hope this fixes the problem. Other then the clicking/popping sound I love my Runner.

I have a clicking/rattle coming from the passenger side dash area and it's actually my glove box. If I tap upwards on the bottom of the glovebox door the whole thing moves and replicates what I've been hearing.

May want to give that a try.

I'll try the glovebox at lunch today. When I took the runner in for the taillights to be replaced the dealer said they couldn't hear the noise. It seems anytime it gets above 55-60 degrees here in NC the noise all but stops. This morning it was in the high 20's and the noise wouldn't stop the entire trip to work. I'll update when I go to lunch and see if it is the glovebox. I truly feel it is the windshield or something at the edge of the dash for temp to make such a difference. I store my runner in a garage at night so maybe the sudden temp difference is causing the noise. I swear whomever helps me get rid of this noise I will buy them a steak dinner or something. I know it is a little thing but this noise is driving me crazy!

I developed a creaking and squeak while off roading this summer. I was bummed thinking I rattled my truck to much and things loosened up. My noise was coming from close to the window and back of dash. Turned out to be dirt and grit build up on the plastic trim around the window and Air intake. I pressure washed around the window and no more creaks and squeaks
