De-carpeting the cargo area = Done

Awhile ago I put down truck bed liner on the rear sliding tray and the floor underneath. This was by far the best energy saving endeavor I have undertaken. The back now takes two minutes to vacuum out instead of the twenty it took to get the dog hair out of the carpet . Last night I pulled the backs off of the seats, removed the carpet and lined the plastic pieces. The stuff was dry this morning and I put it all back together. Looks pretty good, I can't wait till it dries completely. This should make cleanup in the back way easy. Almost looking forward to the next time it gets dirty.

Thanks Guys! I'm interested to see how it holds up. I hope it bonds to the plastic. Can't wait until the stuff dries completely,though....it stinks up my garage.

Ya it really was easier than I anticipated. The seat back just pops out when you pry the sides up. Easy to get off and to put back.

Looks great, dognick! Question - did you fabricate that flashlight holder yourself or did you buy it and attach it? I have a flashlight in the compartment in my trunk but I like it much better how you have yours.

The mounts I used I found on my dad's workbench the last time I was back home. I had looked previously though and found these: NITE IZE LITE CLAMP D - MOUNT YOUR MAGLITE TO THE WALL - eBay (item 310282578521 end time Jan-23-11 10:57:53 PST)

I think Maglite also makes something similar, might look at their site.

I used Herculiner and just put down 2-3 coats on all surfaces. I looked all over different forums and most people said that it was the strongest/longest lasting. I used some kind of off brand spray on bedliner to do the roll cage in my wrangler and it looks okay but isn't very strong. It flakes off and faded after awhile.

Wow looks fantastic. If I go ahead with my purch of a 2011 LE I will definitely come back to this post to check out how it's done. That is the one thing I really like about the XTerra, the non-carpeted cargo area.

Nice. Looks great. I may use your flashlight holder for my mod'd 900 lumen Maglight monster. Make one for yourself..I highly recommend it considering the brightest factory Mag light is the rechargeable version... which is a mere 220 lumens. The mod uses a P7 LED emitter which is the brightest LED made. You really can't look at it or it will blind you....seriously...not figuratively speaking.

Is the texture rough or rubbery? My experience with Herculiner is from 12 yrs ago, and back then it was chunks of metal shavings if I remember correctly, as it was very abrasive.

Curious as to how it's holding up, and if you could do it again, would you? I'm thinking about having my same panels Rhino Lined (rubbery texture) so that my dog doesn't slide around as much. He's all over the place if I accelerate too quick....

It's still fairly rough but it has small rubber chunks in it that make the texture less smooth than other types but still kind of rubbery. It won't take any skin off or anything like that. My Wrangler tub was Lava lined and its smooth but harder to the touch, if that makes sense.

So far everything is holding up great with the exception of the front part of the sliding tray. The Herculiner didn't bond to that type of plastic and its slowly coming off. If I did this again I would have stopped where the original carpet ended. As for the rest, the parts that don't get covered in sand routinely look brand new still. And its super easy to clean so I'm still very happy with it. The outdoor carpet I put down keeps the dogs from flying around back there.

No more carpet

I had some time off from work last week so naturally I started to take things out/off of the truck.

I originally had the weather tech floor liners which were fine for me. Easy to clean, look good and keep things out of the carpet. Well I finally tracked down a smell that had been coming and going for a month or two. it was a 6x9 area of mold that was living under the floor mats under my kids carseat. I had been planning on pulling the carpet out in the distant future but this was reason enough for me to bite the bullet and put down a few coats of truck bed liner.

I kept my carpet floor liners and threw them down and while I was expecting it to look better its good enough for now. I plan to put some kind of sound dampening down to kill the road noise and maybe help finish it a little better.

I wish that the 4Runner Trails had the rubber floor covering like the FJ Cruiser. You would think that with the off road-ness (new word) that they would do this. Oh well. Your truck looks good. I have a cordura cover for mine, works ok but I like yours better.
