De-programming keys?

Does anyone have instructions on de-programming keys from the computer? Apparently it can only hold a certain number of keys, and then old ones need to be removed to allow more. I’ve read many threads about programming spare keys, but can’t find any info on removing them. My runner came with only 1 key, and 1 fob, so I ordered a spare fob, along with 2 Toyota key blanks. I was able to program the fob, and one of the keys, but not the second one no matter how many times going through the programming sequence, so I’m assuming it is because the computer can’t hold any more keys. How do I resolve this?

Anyone? Surely someone on here must have encountered this problem before. I guess it’s a remote possibility that one of the keys I received was a dud, but it seems unlikely after reading in another key thread that only a certain number can be stored at a time. I really want to add a spare “hide a key” somewhere in the frame for an emergency lockout/lost key scenario. I was also considering buying one of those switchblade all in one keys, but I’m reluctant to do that because I may not be able to add anymore keys if I’m correct about the limit being reached.

Hey man, sorry I don’t have the direct answer, but I went through a flip key stage and when I was looking at the instructions on how to program the keys/fobs I remember the instructions had how to erase keys. Like I said, I don’t remember exactly, but it was something to the effect of flipping the key to ‘on’ 3 times instead of 2 tells you how many keys are programmed and 4 times deletes all the keys and whatnot.

So it’s definitely possible. Do some searching via google. Just type in a few key words and then put “site:www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/“ that’s the most effective way To search and how I find all my answers.

I'm sure you could use Techstream to do this. As I understand it you have to erase all the extra keys and then add them back in one at a time. I have TS but have never tried this function.

I know on the 5th Gen's it can be done using Techstream software. Lots of youtube video's on how to do it. Here's one example......



No clue if that works on the 4th gens or not.

The erase procedure is outlined near the bottom. All keys except the one you use to do the procedure are erased.

You can then add back any other keys you have , up to a max of 5 keys.

You can tell if the system can accept any more keys by the blink code. The immobilizer light will blink in a sequence: two blinks, 0.5 second delay, three blinks, 1 second delay, repeat. This is called the, duh, 2-3 Code and it means the system is full and can't accept any more keys. You have to erase all but one at this point and start over with the keys you have on hand.
