If you don't have that, the dealership/pawn shop is there to have it for you.

I texted him and said at the very least he could have offered us compensation for our time and gas money we spent on the trip but I got no response. I can only hope there's a special place in hell for ass@*les like this. I killed an entire day for my girlfriend and I, 11 hours on the road, and I was out the gas money for the trip. Who does that kind of shit to people and are ok with it?

That guy wasn't the only bag of dicks out there.

I have a friend in Denver who promised a guy on CL like $1,500 or $2,000 OVER his asking price for a Tacoma if the seller could guarantee reserve for him. Seller promises it's his.

My friend gets there, and he said sorry but sold to someone else.

Yota trucks of any kind are crack out here.
 
What I have learned in my 50 years on this earth is there's no shortage of Aholes and they're everywhere you go.

I still can't believe the douchebag that let my girlfriend and I drive all the way to Los Angeles from San Jose to buy his 4runner and then text me a half hour from his house saying his son sold the truck. He promised me he'd give me the first opportunity to buy it and then screwed us. By the way, I still have the Aholes address. If I'm ever in his neck of the woods, I'm going to pay him a visit and let him know in person what a piece of shit he is.

However, this forum has been a pleasant surprise. There are some heated debates where people can get a little testy, but for the most part, the discussions on this forum have been very informative and sometimes entertaining to read.
 
I drove from SC to Jacksonville to buy mine because they were so overpriced up here (popular truck to buy for HS/college kids).

I lined up like 4 or 5 to look at but ended up buying the first one--called the others and let them know as soon as I decided.

I guess I was pretty lucky but I didn't want to lead anyone else on, and they all seemed to be open to holding theirs until I drove down.

Figured I'd share a positive CL experience...haha.
 
I almost fell for the scam a few years back of selling something to someone, they 'accidentally' mail a larger check than is necessary, and I send the extra back via wiring/moneygram, etc. Luckily I smarted up and was able to cancel the order at the last second and deposited MY MONEY back into my account.

So I don't like scammers. So here's what I did a few months ago (true story)

I was looking around CL one night at about 1am when I came across an '02 Tacoma that was obviously a scam. It was around $2k, with only 88k original miles, perfect interior, exterior, 4x4, etc. The seller had the whole schpiel about 'pricing it low due to her husband dying and her having to move cross country' or some variant thereof.

So I started off by texting her about 20 times, (copy and paste) saying, "You're fooling no one". I started getting phone calls from the number. She/he just keeps calling and calling and calling. I just kept rejecting the calls and sending the texts.
Keep in mind this is 1am. My wife is in bed asleep next to me and I'm sitting there giggling, phone on completely silent, screwing with this guy.

After sending the text about 40 times, I change it up to say, "Just ****ing with you, I'm interested in your Tacoma." I send this about 40 times as well. The scammer starts calling from a different number, over and over.

After honestly an hour of this, I send a text saying, "Oh, I'm so sorry I missed your call. Thanks for getting back to me. Some people on CL are really rude; they try to sell something, but never respond back to my inquiries. I'm sorry about the time as well; I didn't realize it was so late. " I send this only once.

Scammer replies back with, "I know! I hate that! I tried calling a LOT of times, but I couldn't get ahold of you! Unfortunately, I sold the Tacoma earlier today. And don't worry about the time at all!".

Me: "Ok, that's fine. Thanks again for answering. Have a great night!"

Scammer: "Thanks, you too!"

…………………

I see the Tacoma ad posted anew on CL the next day…
 
I looked around on CL for awhile as well. My most memorable jackwagon seller was a young kid (probably 17? He had his father come with him to meet me in a parking lot so I could look at the truck). Interior's a little dirty but can be cleaned, no major dings, ok.. Then I crawl underneath. EVERYTHING is coated in Nastiness. Find that the drain plug had ripped out, so he filled the hole with a random bolt and a metric ass-ton of JB Weld, and it was still leaking everywhere. Asked how long that had been going on and the kid tells me 'just a few weeks- I make sure I fill it every day' and tells me that "all it needs it to be drilled out and heli-coiled". At this point I tell him that I have no idea how many times it's been run without proper fluid levels in it, and that I need to walk away. Kid gets pissed, jumps in his truck and drives away without a word. Father shakes my hand, tells me sorry for his son wasting my time.

Then like 2 days later I get a text from a number I don't recognize with a pic of a repaired drain plug, with a petty little comment about 'see, I told you it just needed a heli-coil, all fixed now'.. I told him Good for you, sell it to some other fool........

Not 4Runner related, but when I was looking for a motocross ATV, people selling them would be like "never been raced!" Really? Why is all the suspension aftermarket and why are all your pictures of it at the track? If I'm buying a race quad, I expect it to have been raced. Don't lie thinking you're going to sucker me, and that all you did was drive it to the grocery store and to church, loser.

That, or the 3/4 Ton Pickup that has never been used for towing but the hitch is all dinged up

When selling my last 4runner, I had the usual 3/4 of emails from retards that I just ignored, but the few I actually met were mostly nice normal peeps. A Jeep guy that worked at a local 4x4 shop finally realized how shitty a Wrangler is as a dd, checked out my truck, knew what he was looking at, and agreed on a price. We meet at his shop the next day and his coworker comes out and says he thinks he sees accident repairs.

Me: "Ok, you ran a Carfax, do you still want it?'

Him: "Well, I wouldn't care, but my wife will be driving it, and I'm worried about her safety."

Me: "Ok, bye."

Him: "No wait, we just need to talk about the price."

Me: "We already agreed on a price. Are you saying it would be safe for your wife if it was cheaper? Do you even have the full amount that we agreed too?"

Him: "Uhm, errr"

Me: "The last line of my ad said to please not waste my time."
 
It's a shame that there's so many d-bags out there.. I think the next person I contact about a vehicle I may ask them to send me pictures of the engine, drive shafts, ect lol.. Or just cut right to the chase and tell them straight up if they lie about the condition of the truck we're going to have problems!
 
It took me 2 months calling and going thru ads in CL yes most were POS or too much $$$ and there were small time dealers that detailed junk and had the gall to say 1 owner. Any how persistence does pay off I found my 2001 wasn't perfect but it was solid truck to start with and so far been able to work on all the fixes & upgrades myself w/ exception of the trans flush & filter replacement.
