The Mojave road doesn't go through death valley. The Mojave road pretty much goes from Barstow to Laughlin.

Be sure to check trail conditions, Death valley got destroyed with flash floods about 10 days ago and many backcountry roads are closed

My buddy just sent me this. We were going to do a death valley run in late November or early December. Might be holding off for a while now.

That video was awesome. The park service called it a 1000 year event, but I think that's a slight exaggeration. Death Valley, and really all the California deserts have crazy extremes all the time. Maybe not every year, but certainly more often than 1000.
I love the California desert, that view of Badwater was spectacular. My wife and I were just discussing a visit to Charlies place and Warm Springs Canyon, I generally stay out of the actual park area because they don't allow camping except at Furnace Creek. I'm tapped out this month, have a riding trip in two weeks, high school reunion next week, then Turkey day. No chance I could make it until late January or Feb.
If anyone goes, take pictures!!

I was referring to have the time off to make it out there. Good to know though. I wasn't ever that interested in the southwest, but after talking to Bob McNamara at Expo East and seeing some of his pics, it's now a matter of when I can afford to and physically make it out there. I'm trying to talk my cousin into planning a trip out there, but after our last trip it seems as though his wife is vetoing anything without her and the kids for a bit.
I don't know how you married/coupled folks do it, but I digress.

You'll be pleased to learn that there are 9 official campgrounds in DVNP, and many more places like the Homestake Camp at the Racetrack, and the camping area at Mesquite Dunes and others where dispersed car camping is allowed.

If you do camp in the desert make sure it is in a legit marked campsite (on the forestry service map) otherwise there is a chance you'll be in a flood path.

I haven't been to the racetrack in over 20 years. I'd love for my son to see it. I used to object to the camp sites on principal, not so much now. I'll have to research it for next year! Thanks

I don't know if its true or not but I heard that some ass hat messed up the race track by carving his name or some other crap into the dirt and moved the rocks.

Sorry...brain failure...that should be Eureka Dunes, not Mesquite dunes, which is a day-use area only.
Eureka Dunes is a relatively remote place...very nice for a getaway from civilization. Also, you often get to watch your tax dollars at work in the form of F-18's and other military aircraft practicing.
Btw, folks have been, regrettably, occasionally moving the rocks on the Racetrack Playa for years. There was a guy flying drug shipments in that had accomplices on the ground clear the rocks before he landed. That guy is currently living in prison.
Note: Death Valley is often very crowded on Thanksgiving weekend.

Have been trying, and failing, to figure out a trip to Death Valley for a couple years now, but I guess timing is everything. Aaaaannd, that's why I wont make it this year either, wifes sister is flying in from Tennessee with the entire herd, and apparently this will be "the only time for a longtime the whole family can be together," therefore I will be there instead, (....dunno why they cant do it without me...) :roadkill:

Well it is the weekend before the holiday begins.
As far as crowds go, I visited the racetrack at 8 am since we camped with 15 mins of it.
