Decisions, decisions...

What's up guys? I currently drive a 2011 trail team FJ Cruiser. It has 5,000 miles on it. It's okay. It looks like this:

I can buy a New 2011 Toyota 4Runner Trail edition, black in color for $32k. Talk me out of getting rid of the FJ and picking up the 4Runner. Or don't. :

After driving the 4Runner for a day or so, I feel like it has a lot more comforts such as homelink, sunroof, 4 doors etc.

The only thing I'd want to do to the 4runner is sliders, but I'm having a hard time making a decision on which ones to get. I'd prefer a bolt-on application. I'm only 25 and I don't have any kids, but the whole quad door set-up and blind spots on the FJ kind of tick me off. The 4Runner seems like a more practical application.

i was torn between a white trail teams edition fj and my mag gray 2010 trail.

i think i made the right decision. my girlfriend said the same thing. so did my folks.

Tough choice. That's one fine FJ you've got. I was initially looking at an FJ because I love the way it looks but a couple things kept me away. Like you, the doors for one since I have a dog who rides in the back. The small windows and lack of a sunroof were another because I felt like I was in a cave when I sat in it. Nothing like driving the 4R with all the windows down (including the back one) and the sunroof open on a nice day. It's almost like driving a convertible.

As for capability off road, you're pretty close between the two. I wheel with a lot of FJs and sometimes the shorter wheelbase gives them an advantage and others the longer wheelbase gives me an advantage. If your TT has Bilsteins you may find the stock 4R shocks a little softer like a lot of others on the forum. For me the 4R just ends up being slightly more practical as a combination off road vehicle and daily driver. If you're going to lose a lot on trading in the FJ so soon maybe drive it a while longer and see if you still feel the same way. The fact that you posted here tells me you've already made up your mind though.

I looked at the FJ and seriously evaluated the situation. I went with the 4Runner, It has Killer off Road Features Also. I just had 16 inches of Snow and it Performed Extremely well, Better then all my other rigs. It Tracked Straight. I have a family but they ride in the Suburban and only occasionally in the 4 runner. Its nice to have the 4Doors Man, even if you rarely use them. Your friends will appreciate it. Sun Roofs are Nice, Plus the Rig still looks and performs Great lifted with 285's. Just Get Rid of the Stock Tires. Drive from the dealer directly to the Tire Shop. Pick up a Gobi Roof Rack. I plan on Getting Lagitimate Rock Sliders vs the N-fab Steps for next Hunting Season. People Constantly approach me Wondering what in the Hell it is and Raving about the Look. I appreciate it from them. The Fj's are Cool but are a Dime a Dozen out there and a Tricked out 4R Sticks out like a Hot Blonde at a Death Metal Concert.

I'm another guy that briefly considered the FJ, but it was too impractical. I think the 4runner has 90% of the cool factor of the FJ, but it's more practical. However.....to me, the FJ's have a more solid feel. But, you can't go wrong with either.

And If you don't NEED the extra practicality for family, etc., I'd stick with the FJ. In a year or two, when Toyota discontinues the FJ, You'l be glad you have your TT.

I bought my FJ new in Dec 2006, put about $15,000 in mods into it, and owned it until I saw the new 2010 4Runner. Bought my 2011 4Runner TE in May, and have never been happier. It is much more practical for my needs. I loved my FJ though...I say go for it.

The FJ really needs a second generation bad. The exterior is awesome, but there are a lot of compromises in the design... more I feel than with the 4Runner. The interior was what really destroyed it for me, it just seems sort of comical... huge knobs, a square stereo just stuck in, absolutely no creature comforts available, etc.

I test drove one about a year ago and was blown away by two things. The horrible blind spots, and the windshield begging for rocks to crack it. The Trail should give you all the off-road features you want, and afford a whole lot more practicality.
