Deck Plate mod.

Nice job guys....I had done this to both my Tacoma's and had always loved it....I'm probably gonna do this as well on the 4Runner....oh and A10- I can totally hear the difference in the video sounds good better tone to it.....I was also thinking since we have so much room on that side of the engine we could run a tube from the deck plate to close to the front grille, just a thought....Did you guys use a 4" or 6"......if there's even room for a 6"??

As far as the difference in sound of the intake goes. The intakes are tuned to reduce resonant frequencies that are created by the air rushing through the intake and into the various runners. By cutting a hole in the intake box your are changing these reflective surfaces, thus changing the tuning of the intake. That is why you get the change in sound. The various tuned cavities and shape of the air box are used to tune out the frequencies created by the intake to leave you with a much quieter sounding engine.

Example: Just say your intake created the exact frequency that blowing over a beer bottle makes, and you had that beer bottle hum when you drove at a certain speed, say 55mph. Pretty annoying huh. If you attached a resonant chamber to your intake tube at the correct location tuned to that frequency you could tune out that frequency.

There is a whole lot more engineering involved, but I hope this explains the general idea. I am no engineer by any means, but this is my understanding of why factory air intakes have such strange shapes. Of course this applies to sound.

This is also used in electronics as resonant tuned or tank circuits used to filter out undesired frequencies or generating frequencies.

This mod will work on almost any air box, doesnt matter if its a v6 or v8. and you can get the deckplate from any boat store, or ebay.

This one is a 6" which ric said is too big, so you should look for a 4" I just couldnt find one on ebay right now.

yeah greg told me about this weekend...but ive got a couple plans and cant make it...i saw the pics from the 2nd and looks like a ton of fun ill for sure have to make it up sometime.

Not 100% sure of where the mass airflow sensor is on the T4R's, as I haven't done this on my T4R yet but on the V6 Tacomas it is downstream of the Air Filter box.

If the sensor is downstream, if you use silicon sealant, you have to be sure you use special sealant that is non-toxic to sensors. The fumes given off by the std. silicon sealants will trash your MAF.

Oh, and as far as the avatar goes, I thought Eskimochaos was a female and I wondered why a self-respecting female would use an avatar like that. After all, they claim they don't want us poor male slobs ogling them!

not true.... I use the cheapest silicone on my 99 4runner, which was NOT MAF safe, it NEVER threw a code, never effected my MAF sensor, I had the deckplate open for 5 years, never an issue.
On the 04 we used a gasket sealer "The Right Stuff" also NOT MAF safe, after a few weeks, NO codes everything is fine.

Did you do this mod ? Have you had issues with the MAF ??? if so, please share your experiance.

I work at a parts store and I've had multiple customers come back in and have to replace their MAF because of cheap sealant. Of course few if any were Toyota owners, but I was just asking what you were trying to prove. I'm sure that if there was no problem with using that sealant the company wouldn't put a warning on the label.

I did this mod on my tacomas and used cheap silicone and never threw a code......in fact when I upgraded to a k&n intake that threw a code but I believe it was because the filters are so over oiled so switched it back to stock box with deckplate with no problems for three more years....

After reading this thread and looking into the deckplate further I decided to try it on my 05 v8. The mod was pretty simple, but I'm wondering about the sound. Is it supposed to be extremely noticeable? I've had it on for a couple of weeks now, but I can only hear it roar when I really pay attention to it. Does the air filter make a difference because I'm still using the stock one.
