Define a Trickle

So what about all the fluid in the torque converter that you won't be changing? It does make up a fair amount of the total. Unless the aforementioned trickle is defined (i.e. number of drops over a determined period of time) then it's just common sense and not that critical.

I am planning on doing an initial drain and refill at 15k then will be doing one every 50k. This is based on what the fluid looks like at just 50k miles as noted in the example below:

My plan is to keep the truck for as long as I can. I understand the regular recommended service is 60k for towing/off road use and 100k for regular use but I don't feel comfortable with that. Call me old school, but to me doing it at 15k then every 50k helps me sleep at night.

I would yank those tires off and slap some old bias ply tires on there. Then I'd rip out the airbags and seat belts and take the headrests off the seats. Rip out the electronics and slap a nice AM radio in there. Then pull out the A/C....think of the weight you'll save. Power windows and locks....don't need em. Anti lock brakes....stability and traction control??? You can disconnect them by pulling the proper fuses. Now THAT'S a proper old school rig! Oh yeah....then change all your fluids every couple thousand miles.....ahhhh....the good ole days. Right on brother!!!

I also believe in changing at low mileage, but about 25k. Biggest problem has always been people and shops overfilling, so many cars do not have dipsticks/easy access to filling. Eleven qts. of oil expands quite a bit when heated. Under-fill becomes apparent because trany doesn't shift right - although correct level important, an ounce or two when talking 11 qts is not. Get to about correct temp, open level plug - a trickle is solid and a drip is interrupted.

I actually did it this afternoon, not that hard at all and the video I used helped me understand what a trickle is. I drained about 2.8 quarts and filled 3.5 quarts. I then put the truck into trans temp check mode and drained exactly .6 quarts. The atf was a little dark but definitely in great condition. Next drain and refill is at 50k :thumb:.
