Delayed shifting when cold, yes I know its normal but.....

His problem could also play in the crankshaft output bearing. That extra play is putting stress on the flex plate causing it to crack.

That was one of the other things we checked, the run out on the crank shaft was still within spec.

It's hard to say what was causing it for certain, I am leaning towards him using cheap auto parts store flex plates but again, who knows.

He ended up selling his truck and buying a new RAM:redbrick::redbrick:

Or his engine or trans was changed and there are not any alignment dowels in the bell housing or engine block.

I missed a trans dowel in my talon first time I swapped in a race clutch. Destroyed two clutch plates before I figured it out.

Did you ever perform the manual shift test?

Yes I did, that is when I knew for sure my tranny shit the bed. In fact, that is really what I should have done first before replacing the solenoids etc.

If you disconnect the solenoid plug and it still wont shift manually, you know something mechanically is wrong with the tranny.

At that point, I knew I needed a replacement trans.

Ok, I didn't know if you got conflicting results with this test or not, as I do not want to spend the coin on replacing solenoids when the manual shift test points towards those and it still doesn't fix the issue.

Solid plan. Just unplug the solenoid connector and try manually shifting, if it doesn't shift right, you know the tranny itself is messed up.

Are you having the same "won't shift out of 1st until its warmed up" issue that I had?

I think (a guess) mine was the tranny pump itself was failing. Mine developed a whine when the symptoms first started. It would whine when cold for a good 15 seconds then go away. A couple weeks after the whine, the tranny stopped shifting properly. I was able to fix the whine by cleaning the filter (totally plugged up) but the damage was already done.

When I drive slow I get the delayed shift to 3rd. If I hop out on the main drag from my house cold it goes through the gears just fine.

Wondering what ya'll would suggest if I'm having similar issues as thegipper but mine transmission passes the "manual shift" test? I did a trans fluid flush using the cooler hose and replaced the filter recently. Every time I start up it will not shift out of first when computer controlled, but had no issues with the solenoid plugs disconnected.. I'm stumped.

I need some advice, 2000 4Runner Limited, 2WD, 225k, given to me by a friend who was leaving the country for work. He was the original owner and advised the transmission was starting to slip. I replaced the TPS and I’m experiencing high RPMs while moving at varied speeds, no violent bucking, just a whine and eventually transitioning to the next gear. Also, from a cold start, when put in reverse, it feels as though the vehicle is stuck and struggles as though a parking brake is engaged. Trying to sort through these topics and not sure what to make of the info. I love cars but I’m not a mechanic or the least bit knowledgeable of engines and repairs. I’m trying not to be taken to the cleaners by someone so I’m attempting to educate and troubleshoot in one shot. I have a local mechanic who I trust to troubleshoot smaller issues but he seems confused by this one. There’s only surface rust on the frame, body is good, engine starts and runs great, I don’t want to junk it until I do my due diligence. Are there some financially feasible items my mechanic should to try before I take it to a transmission shop. It’s a spare car for around town, the dogs, the beach etc. drain the transmission fluid, check for debris, etc. thanks in advance.

Check the trans fluid condition and level. What color is it? Does it smell burnt?

If the transmission is on the way out then the only real solution would be to replace it. A used transmission from Craigslist would run around 500 or cheaper from a junkyard or pick and pull also another 500 to 750 for labor or you can do it yourself. mtbtim has a video of tranny swap. Rebuilt transmission will run about $2500. Although people have had good results with used transmissions.

I asked my mechanic to drain the trans fluid and check the filter this coming Friday. Wasn’t sure if there is anything else before I take it to a transmission shop.

So is the consensus that swapping a new transmission the only solutions to this problem? I have a similar Toyota T100 that has 408k miles on it. The transmission started doing this late shifting problem just recently. Was trying to see if it may have been an issue with Solenoids or something similar.. too bad its a full transmission swap.

BTW if this is the case how hard is it to rebuild a transmission? dont even try that? too complicated?

Disconnect the solonoid connector from the transmission. Shift it manually, if it is still acting up then it's not your solonoids.

3rd gen 200k miles. In cold weather mine won’t shift into 1st until it warms up. Starts out in 2nd. Once warm everything works fine. I changed out trans fluid, valvoline max atf suck out and refill. Helped a bit.

I scanned above comments and did not notice if anyone suggested suction a sample of tranny fluid from fill plug. Examine it carefully for clues. If it is too old/dark and maybe needs replaced. It will also give a fluid level check when you take sample.
On my 2004 Honda Pilot I noticed an improved shift pattern after a drain & refill.
My 4runner has a replaced tranny under warranty due to chatter/shudder at 48,000 miles caused by malfunction FlexLock torque converter solenoid in tranny valve body.
The fluid was beige prior to taking to dealer for warranty claim. Ground up TC lock up clutch material caused the weird color.
