Does the skid plate become problematic when changing the oil?

All skid plates are problematic when changing oil.

The downey skid is a direct factory replacement (2piece to 1 piece conversion) so the size is the same. But you still need to remove it entirely to change your oil.

The AZrain skid I just picked up is twice the length and is even a bigger pain in the rear. (which reminds me, I gotta put it back on)

Good protection comes at a cost.

Good Times...now you've got my curiousty going. AZrain skid that is 2x the size of the Downey??? What is the cost and do you have any pictures/info/weblinks?

I've had it for 2 weeks now but it's currently sitting in my garage. I'll be bolting it back up but I do have photos to compare the two designs.

Here's some photos of the AZrain's skid plate in comparison w/ Downey's

Downey provides the exact stock skid protection it should provide. The AZrain skid provides more protection beyond the stock where it covers the tranny pan and the headers. It covers up to the crossmember shown below:

stupid question perhaps, but . . .

how do you remove the skid plate to change the oil if the skid plate is welded on?

Gonzo...it's bolted on. Still a pain to remove when changing oil, but you'll be able to slide over stuff.

I know Demello might be working on something too which I can nudge that way since I need some stuff done anyway.

Downey skid plate added...

I recently took the dive and purchased the Downey skid plate. Rather than welding the front tabs, I bolted them on. Worked out really well and it looks great! Now nothing is getting through. The Downey skid plate is strong as hell! My next project is to create the trany skid with the same metal.

No pics yet. Check out page 2 from Goodtimes. The differences between his install and mine is the front mount (he welded where I bolted) and rear mount (I added stainless steel spacers between the skid plate and frame to provide solid support). Otherwise it is possible to bend the rear corners up which allow a little play in the rear attachment. I'll get some pics up soon.
