Dented fuel tank

A dent doesn't sound right to me... something else is up, I think.

idk if the 98's have the whole fuel gauge bull**** like the 99's... but still.

14 gallons... a 4.5 gallon dent would have to be mighty huge. I call the dealership on BS.

Go under your truck and look for a dent. Unless you find a damned crater in your fuel tank, 4.5 gallons is another story.

I just got back from a hunting trip to CO, round trip is roughly 1950 miles.

Found that upon filling up the following:

When gauge is showing 1/2 tank, it will take 8 gallons to fill up.

When gauge is showing 1/4 tank, it will take 12 gallons to fill up.

When the low fuel light is lit, it will take 14 to 16 gallons to fill up depending on how far you drive when the light comes on.

I averaged 20 to 21.8 miles per gallon on the trip.

T4R's are notorious far having problems with the fuel gauge, and your experiences may vary.

I can't imagine what a dent that reduces fuel capacity by 2 gallons would look like but it would have to be really big.

From what I saw the entire back half of the skid plate was bowed up. I looked at the front half and measured the distance between the skid plate and fuel tank. It's half an inch. It doesn't look that bad. But, I would know better if the skid plate was off. I'm no mechanic, so I'm not about to touch it. Should I take it to another mechanic and get a second opinion?


In other news, I saw oil all over the transfer case skid plate and fuel deck skid plate. I just had the seals replaced on the front axel and a oil change. The oil seem old. Maybe it was oil drained out before and the guy didn't whip things up. I'll check the oil level in a few hours after the truck has cooled down.

It's not just that I can't put as much fuel as before. My gas gauge only reads 3/4ths of a tank full after I fill it up. It no longer goes all the way up like it used to.

The fuel guage reading of 3/4 at full seems suspicious. It seems possible that some change in the shape of the tank or filler tube is triggering the gas pump cutoff before the tank is full. I think I would fill the tank at the gas station and then use a gas can to see how much more gas it will take.

I hope you didn't waste money to fit 2 more gallons in your tank.
