aaaaand still stumped. Couldn't find anything wrong with the CVs upon inspection (dust shields didn't look bent), so I ended up taking it to a shop.

Here's where it gets interesting: they couldn't find the noise. The only thing they were able to do was narrow it down to the CVs while running it on a lift...

On the way home from the shop the noise did go away for a while- interesting. 10 miles later, and it's back!!

I think I'm going to pull them and try to see what I can find.. my only hope at this point.

The CV would flop around, as it wasn't connected at all at the hub. I was able to pull it out entirely without taking out a single bolt. I also covered the diff opening as best I could, hopefully keeping all of the dirt out.

I hope its just the CV, but from the second quote (from when you blew the CV up) it sounds like you may have ran the truck back to town from Moody Hill with nothing in one side of the front diff? Did your method of covering the opening keep you from losing diff fluid? Maybe the diff isn't happy. I have no idea if it could make a squealing sound though.

If you have to run home like that again at some point leave the respective CV joints in the hub and diff but pull the shaft from between them so your diff stays sealed.

Basically what I was left with coming back was one side with torn boots, and the other without a shaft!

uh oh, ive heard thats a good way to ruin the wheel bearings. the axle shaft is part of the bearing assembly. double check those for sure.

edit: nvm looks like you left the hub side in. check the braje dust sheild on your hub its probably rubbing.

Yep, left as much as I could in so that I wouldn't break anything else haha. Unfortunately the dust shield is what I checked first, as I've had that rub before... I wish it was that simple fix, but nope! Thanks for the suggestion though!

Duct tape is the best! But yeah, it's really starting to bug me that I cannot figure this out. I'll definitely let you know, thanks! (next post has new info on it)

Alright, a bit of an update.

Pulled the driver side CV today, and drove around for a while- no noise. Not even the slightest hint of squealing.

Checked the CV when I got back, and sure enough, the dust shield at the diff was slightly bent. Hammered it back to as flat as I could get it, and reinstalled it.

Another test drive... no noise! I fixed it! Well, no. About 75 miles later, the noise came back..

I'm going to assume that I bent it a bit while prying it out, as when I checked them about a week ago, it was not bent (as far as I could tell).

Now what? What else could it be?! I think my next step at this point is to replace the whole CV, as it seems to be narrowed down to something inside of it.


On the bright side... I'm getting really good at removing/installing CVs!

Pretty sure I suggested that dust shield. Practice taking out the cv w/o touching that shield.. If you are taking it out again, I'd run down an either get a new shield or new cv w/ shield. My parts stores would easily swap that for me. That shield looks bent to me, must be before. Good luck, you can figure it out don't spend bucks at a mechanic.
My experience that dust shield has a distinct sound as its being propelled. By the way I didn't fix mine by pulling the cv. Just get under there and stick a flat head screwdriver up there and tweak it a little. It's easy to see where it needs small adjustment.

Went out again this morning and really looked at the dust shield closely without removing it after seeing your message. I noticed a very very small bend in it, and took a screwdriver like you suggested and bent it back. Took a test drive.. the noise was gone. Let's hope it stays that way!!

But yeah, if I do pull the CV again, it'll be getting a new shield. This current one is definitely not perfect anymore.

Finally have some exciting and good news versus the previous CV noise talk!
Got some projects wrapped up recently, and I'm really happy with how they turned out.

First, I got the exhaust chopped back. I've dropped it on rocks so many times that the was like an oval, and it just didn't look good. I'm hoping that this has the right angle and enough flow at idle to keep the fumes from clouding up under the rear.




I also chopped my fenders! This is something I've wanted to do since I got the spacers, as any sort of flex with my wheels and spacers combined would rub on the flare. I love how it turned out, because from the outside it looks stock, but now.. so much room for activities!




Finally, I removed the air intake elbow. I did this because I was a little worried about throwing water or mud straight into that tube since there was no plastic covering it anymore. Sure it still is exposed, but this is better for the time being. I'm hoping that I can figure something out that gets the air intake fully inside the engine bay, but without having to use a CAI... who knows.

Unfortunately my camera was acting up a bit, so the photos didn't turn out the best. I do apologize...




















We tried to get Kyle up the Chutes, but that just wasn't going to happen without heavy body damage. After lots of trying, we decided it just wasn't worth it.

Overall a great trip, and a sweet trail!

Made it out to the Colorado Meet and Wheel yesterday! Huge turnout. Met lets of people and saw lots of sweet rigs! Hope to definitely do one of these again sometime!

The lineup- and this isn't even all of them.







After, went wheeling at Illinois Gulch with [MENTION=9139]steezemcqueen[/MENTION], [MENTION=91423]Asaspades93[/MENTION], and others. With the time of day, where the sun was, and my camera still acting up, the pictures are poor again. Had a couple turn out...

















I bent my bumper sides from flexing (was eventually going to happen, mounts were not built strong enough), and broke the rear driver-side flare off. Time for some new clips!

Changed up my rear bumper mounts today! On the last trail run I smacked the bumper pretty hard on a rock, bending the bumper and bit, and also making one of the mounts very loose.

If you look closely, you can see the dent from the rock on that side plate...





It works incredibly well, there is minimal swingout wobble, and the sides are back where I wanted them!

Also recently picked up some little amber leds, and I'm still not sure if I want to install them. I think they'd be used as dust lights, and would flash. I was thinking about putting them on the main swingout bar.

Finally got out to do a bit of snow wheeling on Saturday! Attempted Yankee Hill with [MENTION=91423]Asaspades93[/MENTION], [MENTION=89400]MrHentoni[/MENTION], [MENTION=129084]Flemster[/MENTION], and others.

We ended up with a pretty big group (about 13 rigs, if I remember) of mostly 4Runners.






We didn't make it but about a mile up the road before the snow got too deep to continue.






A few good runs at it didn't help, and so we turned around in search of something else.

Next we tried Pickle Gulch, where the snow was even deeper! It was a bit of a bust for trails that day, but still tons of fun.

I've been doing some general maintenance and stuff I've put off over break, so here's a bit of an update!

Installed some new goodies:

Weathertech floor liners. I love the way these fit and the coverage they have, perfect for how dirty my floor used to get on all of the weekend snowboarding trips.




A dash cam! This is one of those things where I figure for the price it isn't bad to have, even though I hope to never need it.. Blackbox G1W. I'm super happy with the install, as it's nearly 100% hidden, especially the power wire.

I love my weathertechs, just take them out and hit them with a broom and your interior will look so much cleaner. I do that to mine every couple weeks.

Seeing your post about a dash cam has me thinking about getting one myself. What did you use for a power source on it?

It's a little complicated, but... Wire runs behind the mirror/light, into the headliner, over to the a-pillar, down that, behind the dash, and over to the center near the power outlets. I spliced it in there, as I have a little wiring "hub" there- CB, dashcam, other power outlets, etc!

I really recommend getting one, and it's kinda fun to go back through and watch stuff occasionally! Seriously though the one I have is about $50 on Amazon, records pretty good video (1080p that's really clear), and auto records when the car turns on. I like it.

This past week I was able to do the ISR mod. It took me a bit to find the necessary parts, but once I did, this project was relatively easy. I had to order the two hose clamps that are one each side as well, as my old ones were rusted out and I had to cut them off.
