Derpiful's Build and Adventure Thread

For the record, I backed out of this haha. Only Chris and Tracy got stuck.

Also, I was pretty sure we decided you didn't need bumpstops at all with your self clearancing tires and blown off flare haha

Updated the post to reflect this, hahaha

So true. They've bent the rear fenders so much that they do almost clear...

Forgot to show you before. I just pulled out the plastic for the cargo cover and ran straps to hold the tank in place, the cargo box helps a bit also

Once I got back home I did my "let's see what's broken" inspection, and found a few things..

First was the front sway bar... I've only been running the front for a while to try and limit droop, but not anymore. I'm really not sure what happened here, and I'm really struggling to figure out anything with it. Somehow the main bolt for the sway bar bent pretty bad, the endlink fell off somewhere (probably on a trail?), and the bottom bolt was completely sheared. Weird.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/115279794@N04/25942803571/in/dateposted-public/" title="133.swaybarbroken"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1695/25942803571_334748650e_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="133.swaybarbroken"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Also the passenger-side CV. The outer boot was ripped pretty heavily, so that got swapped out and is fine again.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/115279794@N04/25916714052/in/dateposted-public/" title="134.brokencv"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1536/25916714052_39f6fcc9b0_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="134.brokencv"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I did manage to build a simple cargo box/platform! It doesn't have any drawers, and is pretty simple, but the biggest reason I built it was to have something solid to mount the CO2 to. Still pretty happy with it!

Strange with the sway bar. Looks like you're missing the bushing that goes under the actual sway bar too. Didn't you have the quick disconnects?

I need to get to Moab.

You do! It's hard to have a bad time out there. It's a great place.

Check out the previous post (just posted it)... sorted it out and made it work!

Great thread and sweet rig! I'm definitely going to borrow a few ideas for mine.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

Yeah, super weird. I did have quick disconnects. That bushing was there when I last checked the day before my trip... that's why I'm just so confused

You must have had some crazy forces on it to bend it like that and pop that bushing/tear it out. Not like it was an old dry rotter rubber one. Very very strange.

Well, managed to tackle another big project this last weekend... swapping the transfer case. On the way back from Moab the 4wd light started flashing, and nothing could get it to stop. It felt like it was stuck in 4, and sure enough, it was. After quite a bit of troubleshooting, I seemed to narrow it down to the actuator motor being dead. I ended up finding a used TC on craigslist and swapping it in, as it was easier than having to open the case up to swap the motor over. Also, this one has 100k less miles on it.. Swap took about 8 hours- it wasn't terrible, just lots of trying to make all of the bolts line up.

New one on the left, the dirty one is mine..

Here's the best method I came up with to get to one of the top bolts on the TC. 2 wobbles, and about 18" in extensions. It worked surprisingly well..

Hit me up this summer man! My goal is to get out as much as possible before school and don't want to do just day trips with TRC. It would be nice to not fly solo.:flypig:

Work has been slow, but I've been wheeling it most weekends to make up for it! Here's a few photos from Switzerland Trail- not a hard one, but very scenic! Also, recently picked up a Trasharoo for the summer's adventures, custom with a sweet logo of a local group (seen in the first photo).

Also, was able to get out this last weekend to play in the snow storm! The trail (normally a 3) was surprisingly tough- not because of snow, but because of a layer of ice everywhere. It was rough, but it's always a good time being out!

Some bigger things happened this week! I went to Toytec and picked up some new coils for the front and rear, hoping to fix some sagging that's happened after adding all of the weight in armor and gear.

For the rear, I went with 861s (220 lb/in rate)- they're really tall compared to the 891s, but perfect for how much my bumper/swingout weigh and all of the stuff I'm carrying in the back now.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/115279794@N04/26511782574/in/dateposted-public/" title="142.rearcomparison"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7708/26511782574_180a8a7bc5_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="142.rearcomparison"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

For the front, the silver Eibach coils (620 lb/in rate)- even though they're the same height as the 881s, they've definitely lifted me quite a bit more from the higher rate.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/115279794@N04/27083938546/in/dateposted-public/" title="143.frontcomparison"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7270/27083938546_36b9b5b86e_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="143.frontcomparison"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I ran into a bit of a problem when trying to remove the passenger coilover.. the lower bolt was seized into the sleeve! After cutting it out of the mount, drilling, hammering, sawzalling, and doing everything I could think of.. I overnighted some new bushings and went and got them pressed in. This time around, I put a pretty generous amount of anti-seize on the bolts to make sure this never happens again.

Before measurements:
Front: 22"
Rear: 22.5"

After measurements:
Front: 24"
Rear: 25"

I'm really loving it so far, but am trying to minimize driving (because I have a feeling the added lift knocked the alignment out of spec) until Monday, when some bigger things come that will force an alignment! :behindsofa:

Wow that is way taller, looks great though!

I am loving the pictures from the last trip. I have never heard of that trail, but it's on my list now!

315/75R16 Cooper STT Pros. They came in on Monday (not a single Discount Tire in Colorado had them in stock), and I got them mounted that afternoon. Took it in for an alignment on Tuesday, and had the tech move the UCAs forward (in addition to the lower cams being put to max positive), which gave me about 4 inches between the tire and the pinchweld. Not bad.. I don't even think I had that much before. Also, I took my spacers off, as the wider tires make how much it sticks out about the same.

I'll probably still do a firewall chop soon to make sure it clears at all points. Haven't gotten to the rear yet, but I imagine I'll be chopping there too for fitting them at full flex. We'll see!

Overall I do like them quite a bit. They're pretty quiet on the road, but definitely sucked a lot of the power. Can't notice it in town, but on the highway it's rough. Regear time!

Looks awesome, I love coopers, especially the look of the STT pro, congrats! what gears you planning on going to?

Nice Hayden!!! I noticed right away that you'd ditched the spacers. After seeing your rig at the Jamboree last year, I always wondered why you ran them in the first place, considering that your wheels had the right BS to begin with (we have the same wheels, remember).

I'm interested to see how much you have to cut off once you really push it with the new tires. Speaking of that, are you going to the Jambo again this year?

Also, send me a PM with your asking price if you're looking to sell the spacers. I'm keeping an eye open for a set to put on my Wife's '08 4Runner.

Thanks! I'll probably go with 4.88s. 4.56 seems like too little of a jump, 5.29 is overkill, so they seem to be what would work best.

And still no body lift? I'm impressed

Yep! I'm trying my hardest to make these fit without having to re-build the bumper mounts. I think it will work!

Not entirely sure why I kept them so long, to be honest. I just kinda stuck with them after getting the wheels, and never took them off.. I'm glad I did now! It sucked the tires in enough to cut down the mud on the side (I've began to hate mud), but enough to where it still looks good.

Yeah.. me too. Tomorrow I'm going to try and pull the coilovers and cycle it to see what all the firewall chop might entail. Stay tuned.

Definitely going to the Jambo! (so long as work lets me, but I'm 99% sure they will) I'm going to try and do something similar to last year where I had a week long camping trip before it, so something like 11 days camping total. Good times.

PM Sent!
