Derpiful's Build and Adventure Thread

Sometime near the beginning of August Flemster and I went to Telluride for the weekend. This was a short trip and was primarily for some mountain biking at the resort.

We still ran both Black Bear Pass and Imogene as always, since they're quick, easy, and super scenic. Got in a solid day and a half of biking before I was worn out and cut up from falling.

This last weekend I went to Moab for Rock Therapy.

I went out there with a pretty big group- Flemster, 4-Ripcord, Black798 and many others.

We rolled into Moab around 10, grabbed gas and food in town, and ran up to Fins and Things for a quick loop. We only ran a very small section of the trail and headed back to camp. We got there a bit after 11 and stayed up catching up with everyone.

The next morning we got a slow start, but we eventually made it to Gold Bar Rim and Golden Spike.

Somewhere along the trail I started having a weird noise come from my front end whenever I was on the throttle. I initially thought that it was my front diff and I had somehow managed to blow it up, but it turned out to be something completely different.

After opening my hood to inspect, we found a broken motor mount! The mount on the driver side had managed to shear pretty cleanly around the bolts. The bolts themselves were fine, but the frame-side mount was completely broken. When the engine torqued, it would lift up a good 6 inches- not good! The stopping point was the hood. The intake manifold actually ended up denting the underside of the hood pretty decently.

I managed to snake a ratchet strap around the mount and to a crossmember, holding it tight. It was hard to take a picture of because of the location, but you can kind of see it near the bottom of the picture.

This got me 450+ miles home without any problems. It's a little noisier and makes some vibration noise, but that's to be expected when the bushing isn't doing its job. I've been pretty busy and haven't been able to fix it, but that's coming soon.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/45561236931/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8546"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1912/45561236931_b07f239b78_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8546"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Back to Moab: the next morning we had a shortened day as most of us had to get back, and that required a 7+ hour drive. We got a decently early start on Hell's Revenge. I didn't want to stress the motor more than needed, and I had run the trail plenty of times.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/43743560780/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8566"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1901/43743560780_d50f9fb177_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8566"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

With our short day, we only ran the trail to the gate and then back out. Going the other way on the trail is an interesting experience, and it feels like a completely different trail. The very beginning section is exciting the other way.

Until next time! I'm sure it won't be too long until I'm out there again..

Day 4:
We headed west on the Beartooth highway. While stopped to take pictures at a waterfall, an old woman fell off the trail, down a steep embankment probably 100ft. We were one of the first there, and did everything we could to help out. This included blocking the road for this:

After getting her out and into the helicopter, we kept going west! The Beartooth Highway is awesome, and the perfect drive.

We headed back into Yellowstone for a little bit:

After we got out of the park, we had dinner in Gardiner and camped not too far away.

Day 5:
This day was mostly a road day. Once everyone was ready, we headed up through Bozeman and to Glacier. We camped near the park at a river, a spot that I picked out! This ended up being one of the favorite campsites.

Day 6:
We headed into Glacier and drove Going-to-the-Sun Road, which was incredible! Definitely a must-do if you're at the park. However, it was incredibly busy and finding parking was tough.

We kept heading North towards the border, and made it around dinner time!

We had trouble finding any sort of free or dispersed camping in the area, and had to pay to stay at a campground.

Day 7:
Banff! With a relatively early start, we drove into Banff after a few more hours of driving.

I ended up splitting up with everyone here, as I had to catch a flight that night and wanted to check out some of the park before I left.

After a few hours of exploring, I drove to Calgary. I needed to be back in Denver for my internship (the one day I wasn't able to take off), so I flew in late the night before. After working on Saturday, I headed back to the airport and flew back to Calgary that night! After getting in around 11, I got a hotel for the night and got some much needed sleep.

Woke up early the next morning and headed south. Drove the entire 1100 miles and 17 hours on Sunday, and made it back to Fort Collins around 11 PM. Long day... but I was back just in time to be back at work on Monday.

Wow! Sounds like an awesome trip!!

My Wife and I have spent years exploring Western Canada--- and the Rockies--- From the US border to Mt Robson. Luckily we live in Vernon BC, 2hrs drive from the Rockies (5 hrs from Banff) and 4 from Vancouver. We routinely do the Summer drive from Lake Louise to Banff, and up the Ice Fields Parkway to Jasper-- there are thousands of trails-- and dozens of camp locations. Absolutely beautiful country, even or especially in the Winter! Everytime we go, we find something new, love this country!!!

Wow I didn't even realize Rock Therapy had been moved to October (I'm never on TW). Was it a total sh$t show? I'm considering going next year if it will be in October again. I'd really like to spend a night in Elephant Hill area. Last time we did a 10 hr day trip and it was exhausting.

That's awesome! I know I'll be going back in the future, it was amazing.

No, it was good! It definitely isn't like it used to be though. There aren't organized trail runs or a raffle anymore, but it was still good. October was a nice change- no bugs, and only 70deg during the day.

A few things to share.

First of all, a nice photo from Flemster from a recent snow wheeling trip. I really wish it snowed more here..

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/140899154@N02/44633617230/in/dateposted/" title="FLEM9618"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7872/44633617230_173f4cff40_b.jpg" width="683" height="1024" alt="FLEM9618"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I recently cleaned my power steering reservoir screen, and WOW what a difference it made! My engine sounds much quieter and better than it has in a looong time. Easy fix!

Anyways, onto some updates for this year! I've been trying to think longer term and do some planning, and here's what I've come up with:

- Replace CO2 regulator. I'm gonna swap my fixed 150psi to an adjustable 0-250psi. Should be a bit faster!

- Rear body mounts - Sonoran Steel. My rear bumper is starting to move pretty significantly, and it's definitely the rear body mounts. Hopefully these will help.

- Gears! I think it's finally that time. I'm pretty committed to 5.29s, which probably should have happened a long time ago... I've started compiling a parts/cost list, and now I'm just trying to read up on how to do the front. I'm planning on doing both myself to save a good bit of money, as when I did the rear last time it really wasn't that bad.

Good to hear your finally getting gears! 5.29s are the right choice IMO for 35s. They're honestly pretty perfect with my 33s for now as long as I dont try and get over 75. I hope those body mounts are the fix for the bumper movement. And if your getting the co2 regulator I think you are (65 dollar knockoff power tank) I just got that for my co2 setup to replace the poly performance regulator it came with. Seemed like a good idea so I can run air tools at their recommended pressures.

When I did my gears I used this kit from just differentials. It had everything I needed and seemed to be the cheapest option as well, especially after a 15% off black Friday deal. The only issue I ran into was the stake ut for the front diff wasn't the type that I wanted but I just picked up one at the dealer since it was pretty cheap.

For the front diff if you have a press and some scrap chunks of metal to push the carrier shims out its no harder than the rear 8 inch. I honestly thought it was easier and it took me less time setting up the front but I did get lucky with my backlash being right on the first try so I only had to add 12 thou of shim on each side to get the carrier bearing preload right. I equated it to setting up a dana style axle but on the bench so everything is right in front of you and the carrier just bolts together rather than having to beat it all in. The only special tool I needed was a small lever arm attachment for my dial indicator. I've also got quite a few pictures on my flickr of how it all breaks down so that might be helpful. Any plans for a front locker too or just the new gears?

Lever arm attachment I got

Thanks Phoenix, all good info. I'm sure it'll be a huge step up over my 4.10s..

That's the regulator I'm going with! We'll see how it works. I'm just excited for 250psi vs 150psi.

That's good to hear the front diff was pretty easy, I was nervous about that one. I'll definitely be looking at your photos for some reference. Right now I'm thinking no front locker, as that's just a huge chunk of money. I've looked around and it seems the cheapest option is the Harrop Elocker for $1300 (wouldn't want an auto locker). It would be nice, but I'm also worried about breaking more components in the front.

A few more photos to add!

First, I recently repainted everything. It took a while, but it looks much better than it did before. Both bumpers, sliders, grill, and frame were all painted.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/46924669371/in/dateposted-public/" title="222.painting"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7819/46924669371_de325164e8_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="222.painting"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Also some more snow wheeling pictures. I've been getting out a bunch recently and it's been awesome. The winch has been getting a workout, but it's been doing great and I've had zero problems with it.

Another spring break in Moab!

Finally got all of my photos edited. I left Friday afternoon and rolled into Moab sometime around midnight. Met up with Fishwerks, EatonKyleH, Twenman4, NateMob, Flemster, Black798, and some others this year!

Got up early and headed into town/ towards trails early Saturday morning, where we ended up on Steel Bender. I've done this one before, but not everyone else had. It's a fun one!

The last time we were here, the main ledge obstacle wasn't nearly as big and we went down it. Now it's much larger, and we opted for the bypass.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/46643048975/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_8978"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7802/46643048975_95e87ab93b_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8978"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Halfway up a hill climb I heard the fan hitting the shroud again and knew what that meant- the motor mount had failed again. This time, the mount itself was gone. We walked back on the trail a bit to try and find it, but couldn't. The motor had shifted down and back, and so I broke out the ratchet straps to try and get creative and hold it down. Ended up with something that worked but wasn't great, but it let us keep going.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/46643044525/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_9092"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7839/46643044525_e8ea25c93a_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_9092"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

After airing up and heading back towards town/camp, I heard a thump-thump noise that matched my wheel speed and sounded exactly like a blown diff. Once in town we came up with a plan to pull my driveshaft and CVs so I could at least drive home. That's when we found the motor mount, thought to be lost, wedged between the CV and a crossmember! Took some major effort to get it out, but after a quick test drive all crazy noises were gone. Phew! Back to camp to eat and enjoy the time.

On Sunday we decided to do Hell's Revenge. We met up with @%1; and some others.

We had a few trucks go up the gate, and Fishwerks was heading up when....

Black798 and I hooked up our winches (luckily they were the same, so they were the same speed) and pulled him up so we could check plugs before starting it. It started up with zero hesitation or smoke. The damage wasn't too bad, just a door and a few scratches.

After that we did the rest of the trail and bypassed all of the other major obstacles.

On Monday, everyone headed different ways while Flemster and I headed south more. We went and did some hiking and found some incredible slot canyons, something which I had never experienced before. After camping Monday night, I drove back home 9 or so hours... until next year!

Photos are looking excellent my dude!

Thanks for winching me out, and looks like the rest of your spring break was fun (I need to go on that hike!).

How was the install of the new motor mounts?

A trip to remember for sure! Great pics as usual, that new lens is a game changer.

It's been amazing! Well worth it.

Awesome pics Hayden!

Damn you guys are killing the the photo game more than ever.

Thanks Kyle! That photo of you is probably my favorite one from this trip.

Thanks! The hike was amazing, would recommend.

Next post is the motor mounts...!

awesome pics and trip, looking forward to moab this year!

Thank you! Moab is always a good time (except maybe when it's 115 degrees)

Lots of good maintenance happened recently. Took forever, but it was worth it!

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/40624239053/in/dateposted-public/" title="226.maintenance"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7878/40624239053_efa40098c2_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="226.maintenance"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

First thing was the motor mounts. I finally realized it wasn't just the frame side mount that was broken, but the mount itself also.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/32647810887/in/dateposted-public/" title="227.mounts"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7839/32647810887_38f35b3143_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="227.mounts"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

As you can see, it was missing the main bolt that connected the mount to the engine.

I opted to go with OEM mounts, as the old ones were proven to last quite a while and had taken plenty of abuse. 35s and being undergeared really doesn't help.

Taking the old mounts out was surprisingly easy, but did take some time. I had the engine lifted by the oil pan- not my favorite method, but it worked.

For the frame side of the mount being broken, I quickly made some new brackets to weld on that were about twice as thick as the factory ones. I had to grind off as much of the old mount as I could, which was near impossible given the space constraints.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/40624238973/in/dateposted-public/" title="228.mount"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7876/40624238973_00133aa596_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="228.mount"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Once the new mounts were ready to go in, I bolted them up to the engine first, then dropped it in place and lined up the motor-to-frame bolt holes. Welding the new mounts on was the biggest problem of this project. There wasn't a great angle to get the mig gun in, but I did the best I could and laid some ugly beads. After that, the rest of the mount bolted up easily!

I replaced my brake pads, which were much more worn that I thought.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/32647810787/in/dateposted-public/" title="229.brakes"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7865/32647810787_6b166e8a9c_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="229.brakes"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I also replaced the rubber intake tubes. The old ones were cracked and had some minor holes, which couldn't have been too good in dusty conditions.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/derpiful/32647810947/in/dateposted-public/" title="230.intake"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7813/32647810947_2d067e79d0_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="230.intake"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The passenger wheel bearing also got replaced, as a few days prior it had started making noise and developed play. It happened very quickly, which surprised me. I had replaced the driver side a few years ago when something similar happened. I opted not to do the press work myself, but found a local machine shop that did it for $40.

I also welded in some new skid plate mounting nuts (which is why the LCAs are off) and greased my UCAs. I was prepared to also replace my SPC ball joints, but after getting it all apart, it turns out the part that presses into the spindle had developed some play. I ended up welding it on, knowing that I won't be taking these SPC arms off.

Finally, I replaced both calipers (lifetime warranty) and added stainless steel lines.

After all of this, it overall drives smoother, quieter, and nicer. It was a total of about 9 hours of work for everything. I'm happy with the results even though it was a good chunk of change!

broken Motor Mounts

it is just a suggestion but you should really chain the motor mounts. weld a chain to the frame and then bolt the other end to the top of the motor mount or vice versa. Make it tight so that the motor can't pull apart again and yet loose enough to not transfer vibration. it is a cheap insurance and you won't regret it.

this is a 22r mount that is chained but you get the idea.
