Detached CV boot

So I had a long night last night installing my new alternator and while doing that I notice the outside cv boot completely detached and was spewing grease all over, it doesn't look torn. What's the process from here? Regrease and clean and then use existing clamp? I couldn't find any threads about the boot just popping off. I'm at work now I'll take pics when I get home. Any help would be appreciated.

Add some grease and use a big hose clamp or new cv clamp although you'll need a special tool for tightening them depending on what type of clamp it is. You'll have to cut the old clamp off.

okay sounds good, is this something that happens often? I know tears are with a lift but im stock height so im not sure.

I can't remember hearing of it happening on a stock 4runner but I'm sure it does here and there...

Check it closely. Often they tear completely and cleanly right next to the clamp. The remaining small ring of boot will stay under the clamp.

If this is the case, chances are there won't be enough length on the boot to reattach it properly. Even if you do get it attached it will likely tear again because of the added stretch. (ask me how I know)

I just rebooted my driver's side cv because of this exact problem. $40 kit from Toyota has everything you need. Boots, clamps, grease. Most folks will tell you just to replace axle with a reman one to save the labor of rebooting (it's messy).

However, I found rebooting to be rather painless, and I like having my OEM axle. Plus I have a parts washer so the mess was almost a non-factor.

I have it temporarily fixed with a hose clamp(ghetto I know) until I can order a new boot because my local oreilly didn't have a new clamp , yeah I've been through there a few times but never to climb, looks like a great place tho. Have you?

I've been once. Only climbed a moderate route, forget the name. Moby Dick maybe? Something like that. Fun climbing, but man the approach was rough. Lots of cactus.

Had the same issue I caught it earlier enough that it wasn't and issue so I just threw a new hose clamp on it!

Mine was similar but it was the outer closest to the wheel so I had to attach 2 hose clamps to fit, how has your clamp held up? I may just leave it till I lift cause I'm sure I'll tear my boots then as most people do.

So far its is great, but it has only been 150+ miles on it since I did it so who knows for the long run...

Mine was leaking so I went to take out the crap grease, add new grease, and reclamp it today. I accidentally pushed the needle of the grease gun straight through the boot So now I have to pull the thing apart to put the new boot on. I could not find instructions here (maybe I missed them) but I did find some over on 120 CV Joint Replacement Info - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum

That will probably happen tomorrow.

That link is a good one, I used the same boot kit. One note though: The slide hammer is a nasty prank in my opinion. I never could get it to work right. Theres just not enough room. I found it much easier to get under the truck with a hammer and punch. There are notches on the CV axle you can align the punch with and go to town. Use a brass punch and you won't hurt the axle.
