In the late 80's and 90's this was a huge deal. I lived in Detroit and there was large ring of dealers that would bring in grey cars and trucks and do the swaps on the turn signals and add a cat and you could get a Defender, G Wagon, 850 BMW and other difficult to obtain vehicles in the states for stupid low prices.

Quite few of these guys went to prison for a very long time for this.

I am Diesel nut and have always wanted a Diesel 4 Runner or Land Cruiser and have looked at this option. After they jailed the heads of this one crew I just kept dreaming about a Diesel Land Cruiser and still do today.

It is really so stupid that they really think that they are doing something good hear. It is not like hundreds of thousands of people are dieing in a EU or South American delivered Land Cruiser.

Frustrating Big Government stupidity.

Problem is...a vehicle imported illegally is a law that can be enforced. People here illegally? The political will to enforce those laws doesn't exist and never fully has. When and if Americans can ever get on the same page as far as illegal immigration, then you might see DHS, the Border Patrol, et al getting rid of them.

Right now, about half the time DHS tries to get rid of someone who entered the country illegally and enforce the existing immigration laws, folks who are sympathetic to that illegal are on the horn to it Senator so-and-so. Whether DHS rounds up illegals at X workplace, the owner of which spends a lot of money lining that Senator's pockets. Or whether they deport an illegal nanny who works for a well-off, politically-connected campaign contributor. The results are the same.

Senator and colleagues lean on DHS, who halts worksite enforcement operations, or they reluctantly agree only to go after "criminal" aliens (i.e. with documentable rap sheets) for a given time period. So the everyday illegal worker gets a pass.

It happened when it was the old INS and it's still happening today. By going after illegally-imported vehicles, fake Roloexes, and other seemingly-benign (but still illegal) stuff, DHS is enforcing the laws it's able to enforce - rather than sitting around and doing nothing.

And therein lies the problem. On a basic economic level, getting rid of the vast majority of illegal immigrants is so easy. Dry up the money & the majority will leave. Noticable numbers leaving at the peak of the downturn proves this.

Unfortunately, instead of jailing employers (the right & actually legal thing to do) we waver to the myriad of businesses who profit through the exploitation of illegal immigrants. What better than low-paid employees who are afraid to stand up for basic rights?

If we really need these workers, fine. But the need to go home & enter through the proper channels.

Of course, none of this prevents the government from protecting me from myself by disallowing me to import am exotic sports car...
