So the time has come, I have done a little bit of work on my runner so I figure I start a build thread to help document my maintenance, mods , and offroad runs/adventures

this one poped up at a local tow

97 limited 4x4 with rear diff lock

This is how she sits today (1/24/17) (295,000)

So i checked her out at the yard. She started right up no knocks ticks but cel light was flashing
And there was a noticeable misfire on all cylinders. It felt sluggish with absolutely no power and constant hesitation.. i limped her home 2 miles away.

Then i poped the hood to try to figure out this misfire
I thought i start simple/ lease expensive and ordered up some
Plugs
Denso k16tr11
Ngk wires Te66
So after i swapped these out
No more misfire cel off, engine running smooth
So i went ahead and flushed coolant with zerex Asian
Changed out the oil
Trans fluid was amazingly clean to my surprise so i left that as is
Swapped air filter
Anyway
My build plan changes pretty much everytime i take it out.

engine/trans
3.4 auto
denso plugs (276,100)
ngk wires (276,100)
b&m 70268 complete bypass
Oem rad/cap (291000)
Oem hoses (291000)
Oem thermostat (291000)
Drive belts (291000)
Trans fluid(288000)
Diff/transfer case (288000)
suspension
front
99 talls 3rd perch
bilstein 5100 shocks
swaybar disconnected
oem balljoints (288,000)
oem otre (288,000)
beck and arnley itre (288,000)
rear
ome 2906
bilstein 5100 shocks

wheels/tires/brakes
5 star wheels
265/75 bfg ko2s
napa pads and rotors (280,240)

misc
cb ashtray mod

So after that trip i knew i needed a tranny cooler asap
So i ordered a b&m 70268
Install was pretty straight forward
The only thing that got me were those dang hose clamps
I ended going with 3/8 id transmission hose
And of course the clamps were too small.
I ended up getting some clamps over at pepboys to finish everything up

Heres where i ran the hoses thru a hole made for the ac lines.. i used some spare heater hose and split it in half, and padded the surrounding the hoses pass thru to avoid chaffing and scraping

I mounted it closer to the passenger side. I put the ports pointing to the side (better pics later)

One of the things i definitely needed was a cb for trail communication
But first i had to take care of this body ground cable
For some reason its been cut off or rusted thru whichever the case
It needed to be replaced so i just replaced both terminals since i had to do one

After giving it a look it seems the negative terminal is connected to the the wire
So the only option was to cut and solder a new terminal on
But after reading some threads i came across a post ( forgot who or i would give you full credit if you read this big thanks for the idea)
So instead of cutting the wire
I poped out the angle grinder and cut the oem terminal "ring" off so it made a flat surface to connect to the battery
The circle inside the terminal was a bit small to fit on the battery, so i poped out a knife and chafed the inside in a circular motion intill it was a perfect fit
Here you can see how i cut it

Heres how it looked after everything was said and done

This way was alot easier then the solder method
And works really great truck starts right up

After seeing all these threads about lbj failures I had to get mine done. I went with oem lbj and oem outer tie rod ends and Beck and Arnley inners

Torque torque

And all done

Obligated runner photo

After seeing how good all the old parts were I'm thinking my truck was a victim of lbj failure it's a salvage title and the passenger wheel well plastic trim it basically ripped off glad I finally got around to this and now truck feels solid over bumps

Love your thread so far. I could go this route myself, but the wife would blow a gasket.
Your 1997, if indeed, with a salvage title, appears to be a complete front end rebuild.
Bumper, grille, not 97, and the hood paint n too good of condition compared to the roof.
Corners don't seem to fit properly either.

I'm subscribing, as I like what you have. Drives good, safe, that's all that matters. 300K will be on you before you know t!
Best to you dude.

A few months back i picked up some 5 stars from a forum member. They were painted duplicolor graphite which were the color I was aiming for to match my fender flares. I just need to get another can and touch em up a bit , but for now they look good. These rims must make my tires pop cause I been getting nodes and compliments since I threw them on
I'm slowly getting ready for my tbu just need to rebuilt my calipers still

And got my scan Guage finally . the highest coolant temp my truck read was 205
I'm thinking a new oem rad thermostat hoses and possibly fan clutch is gonna be ordered when I get some time to stop by my local toyota
There prices are actually pretty close to camelback so I been going there

Thanks man luckily my wife is cool with my hobbies
And I have some big plans for this runner but it will take some time.. and yea front end is completely different..I'm gonna keep the grill but not the bumper I got something in the garage that needs some work but it's gonna be well worth it believe me!!
There's just so much motivation from everyone's builds on this site
So big thanks to everyone!!

G,
I'm prepping for the LBJ job. Were you satisfied with the B&A ITREs?
Quality? Warranty?
OEM ITREs are pricy for the minimal driving my truck gets. Doing it for my daughter, so want to use quality parts.

So far they been holding up really well and they seemed to be made with pretty good quality. they seemed like the same weight and constructed the same as the oem ones I took off
And all the reviews seemed pretty solid , also they came with extra nuts which came in handy cause one of mine were seized on pretty good. Of course if I had the extra money I would of went oem but I'm happy with the b&a's

Also pepboys carries them and if you order online you can get a nice discount just a heads up if you do go that route

Took the fam out today to get some dirt time
We did 2N06 up to big bear then chilled and had lunch
I got stuck in a jeep sandwich and when we caught up with the rest of there group they were blocking the trail so they had to move for the ol toyota

Also had to pop the factory cv clamps off and put some hose clamps on there. After a day on the dirt i got no more leaks

Dident getting much pictures but here's one

Picked up a arb that's been in a roll over from forum member around March. I gave it to one of my buddy's to work on and it took a little over a week and lots of work.
I told BigRonDog I'll post pictures after its done.
I think it came out pretty good considering how bent it was, and banging this thick metal is not easy
Check it out

How do you guys think it came out
