Did I Find a Jewel? '99 Limited w/Locker

So I stumbled upon this diamond in the rough today. 1999 Limited w/rear E-Locker, 109,000 miles, 1 owner, no wrecks. They're asking 9900 and its valued at 9400. There is no record of timing belt/water pump being done, so that's needed, plus it might have some of those good ole leaky valve covers (things which I may be able to negotiate down with).

So do I sell my other rig and buy this one?!?

I'd have it looked over, before you buy. I just bought a 2000 Limited, 63,000 miles, pristine in and out. Pd $16,000. Garaged, every service done. Like brand new. Some would say "ouch", but it was close to perfect, other than year. Wanted a 99

Pretty low mileage, but still seems steep for a 99. You can find 01-02s for that around here.

I'd keep yours and just spend the extra money you would be spending on mods if that's what you're into.

00 limited here. Paid less than that and had fresh gaskets, recent tranny fluid change, recent timing belt and wp. Looks like you found a nice truck but the price is a bit high if you have to do that work to it.

Just bought my 2000 limited in December 145,000 miles paid $6500 for it. Truck was bone stock and looked great when purchased. I've since donenmods in my sig. I'd try to get them down into the $8,000- $8500 range

I really don't know why he wants to 'upgrade' to a 1 year newer truck. Yes less miles, but being able to go TONS of miles is the big upside of our trucks. If you buy and sell like that, you are giving other people the real value IMO...

Paid $7700 for a SR5 w/121k a few months ago. Should have paid 72 but that is neither here nor there.

I think the obsession with the super low miles is idiotic. Yeah, you get one with 53k mi, but unless you drive 40k mi a year, the frame is going to rust out first!

I got my 00 Limited with 102k and every option from the original owner for $8500. That is also in the Bay Area market which is right up there with the PNW and SoCal prices. I'd say 8-9k is reasonable. If I went back I might have bought one with more miles just so I could have some more money for mods, but I've had 0 problems so far with mine and it's been almost a year.

No man I totally disagree. I think you made the best choice! I bought mine with more miles.... sure it still drives and runs perfect and has been the least problematic vehicle I've ever owned, BUT I still find myself looking for "one owner, low mileage gems" on craigslist almost everyday. I wish I would have held out for a lower mileage one to build upon. Now I'm thinking I'll either be swapping over to a lower mileage T4R after University or going to a LC. You dun good! haha

That's a pretty reasonable asking price.

Why do you want to swap the 98? If it's just for lower mileage and the mid-gen upgrades, I'd say that they aren't worth swapping rigs for (unless your current rig has over 200k and is in rough shape). Save your money and put it towards mods for the 98. My 2 cents.

Too funny, we got the same color truck! Sunfire red, with the (Silver? Platinum?) armor. Toyota doesn't have touch up paint for the armor, have you found one that works well??

I found mine on SJ Craigs' 2 years ago with 125,000 miles on it, 1 owner, it had the 100,000 mile dealer service package so I have all the records of when stuff was done at Piercy Toyota. Limited, Factory locker, all the options and got it for $6,000 in great shape. 0 problems in two years now and I've driven up to the snow a bunch of times already!

IMHO, keep what ya have and throw a locker in it, if the 99 cup holder is a big deal, just do the swap of the cup holders :hiding:

It is always sketchy when dealers here in NC use ground up pulp as their parking area base layer. As a friend of mine in the NC forestry commission postulated recently that it is to hide the leaks better from the used cars. I don't know how much merit his statement carries.

Thanks for all the comments, from everyone. If they're willing to go down to around $8k I may go for it, but that's negotiating the timing belt/water pump job along with possibly valve cover gaskets. I've got to get it on a lift with my mechanic first.

My 98 runs like a clock, and I'm happy with it, but it does have cosmetic flaws that I don't like. It's Dookie brown (no, not "Dookie" blue) with dents and fading paint everywhere, dookie brown interior, no locker, and of course lacks all of the attractive mid-gen upgrades.

Aren't good paint jobs $1200+?

Given LittleCeasar's avatar, I don't think he has any room to be commenting on lost basketball games. So far, they've never known what victory tastes like in Chapel Hill as far as basketball goes and I don't see that changing this year. Yes, NEVER, as in Clemson has tried and failed over 50 times. NEVER as in they hold the dubious honor of having the NCAA record for "guest futility". And that's cancelled out by how many championships? Oh, that's right, none! LOL

Perfection, they didn't help themselves a lot but they didn't give that game away. Duke scored 3 points on what should have been an obvious traveling violation that even a rookie ref could have called without argument from old ratface. Yet it turned into the worst missed walking call since Chris Weber in the 93 championship game. That kid didn't take one extra step, he took 3. Even in the NBA, that's traveling.

So, with all that said, yeh a good paint job ain't cheap. I don't know if you'd get that truck for $8k if it turns out to be in the shape claimed and looks. If you can't tell from the above rant, I'm from NC as well and bought mine in Charlotte. Decent runners aren't given away often around here and there are tons of them on the roads everyday. If it checks out, I'd start with book at the most, and work down from there based on the work needed such as TB/WP, valve cover gaskets, and any other regular maint that should be done but they can't prove has been done (tranny, coolant, etc.).

My experience

I just bought a 99 Limited with 84k miles, recent timing belt, new radiator, and carfax certified one owner and no crashes (although Im wondering why they replaced the radiator so early) for $12k from a dealer who wouldnt budge on price. I really wanted a 99 for the mid gen upgrades and the low miles sold me on it over some nicer looking 98's (I dont love the green & tan color and one of the running boards was rusted off).
