Did I Price my Highlander Edition correctly?

That SR5 had the 4.30 gears. The 4.56 gears were in the base model to make up for the 4 cylinder.

Here's how 4wd 3rd gen 4Runners with the E-locker have invariably been equipped for gearing, that I've seen. I've yet to find an exception to this:

V6, W/automatic transmission: 4.30:1
V6, W/manual 5_speed transmission: 4.10:1
I4, W/manual 5-speed transmission: 4.56:1

For the record, my '97 SR5, V6, 4wd, 5-speed, E-locker equipped 4Runner, which I bought new, has 4.10:1 gears.

Didn't know the manuals got 4.10s. The 4.56 I forgot to specify for manuals only as well. I've never seen an automatic 4 cylinder with the rear locker.

99.7842% of the general population does not know or care that it is a highlander. Therefore placing a premium on that particular piece of 90's marketing makes no sense. It is a clean black 4Runner with a hood scoop, good things. It has a rusty undercarriage and deferred maintenance, bad things. Your ad kinda makes you sound like a jerk, I'd lowball you for the fun of it!:flipoff:

You're alive?

Nice. I didn't know being 100% transparent about all the work I've put in the truck, along with its open (and relatively minor) issues made me sound like a jerk but thanks for the feedback. Just looking to sell it, and will probably take a discount within reason to get the deal done.

I hope you realize by the :flipoff: that I was just jerking your chain, although the comment about your precious free time does kinda come off the wrong way. Here's some more constructive advice from a guy who has bought and sold a boatload of Toyota 4x4's (some rare and special and sought beyond state lines).

1) If your under carriage has rust, post pictures of the under carriage. Everybody's definition of acceptable frame rust is subjective, so photos would help you avoid some tire kickers.
2) A whole bunch of exterior photos from the same angles, only one interior photo of the cargo area. People buying a truck with a bunch of miles generally want to see the dash and seats and whatnot for wear or damage.

I have also bought and sold a couple "unicorn" 4runners (V6, 5-speed, locked, one even had toyota leather in an sr5). The rarity doesn't necessarily make it worth any more than any other 4runner on the market. The rarity factor is only worth something to an enthusiast and your most likely buyer is just somebody looking for an SUV, not a Toyota nut.

The market is different everywhere, but my honest assessment is that you've got probably a $5,000 truck. Maybe they're worth more in CA.

The main turn off for me is the ABS light. I know that no one in my family will ever buy a used vehicle with a warning light on the dash.

In my experience, a concise advertisement with enough detailed pictures to do that talking works best.

Guess I'll be holding on to my Sport for a while, which I refuse to call a Highlander, since it's got the locker and factory leather and no rust to speak of.

I always thought yours was a limited, I must have brain-farted that. Yes I'm alive, but I have pretty much no life. Too much work :(

Not all 99 4wd's came with the taller springs. I've seen a few that were the standard springs. Some regular 4WD's did come with them but all the 4wd Highlander editions did have them. Thats why its commonly referred as the Highlander springs.

I believe you but I've never seen a 99 that didn't have the taller springs, whether it be a Base, SR5 or Limited.

If they came from the factory with 15" wheels, they got the short springs--presumably base models. I've never seen one either. I check out every '99 I see, too. All with 16" wheels from the factory should have the tall springs (the vast majority in North America.)

That makes sense. :high5:

In order to get close to the $6k asking you will have to fix the outstanding issues, particularly the ABS light, VCG's if they are really bad, the missing radio, and if the wobble is really noticeable. Even so, you should be prepared to get less than $5.

Asking $6k with the outstanding issues limits you to a buyer who wants to tackle those, and if they do, they'll want a significant decrease in the asking price. You'll get offers of $3k.

Fix the problems and you'll have more potential buyers. A buyer will show up. Might take a couple months.

Yes - you are too high for a truck with all those "little" issues. First it can not pass inspection without a working parking brake so anyone who buys it will have to get that fixed pretty soon. All the issues you listed off will be an additional thousand dollars on top of the $6k you want. Who buys a "good" vehicle without a working radio? Only someone who understands they are going to have to spend a couple bucks to get a working unit installed. While it may be easy for you to install a radio; not everyone enjoys messing with audio stuff. I have no issues rebuilding a motor but will immediately pass at installing a radio. I just do not care for that kind of stuff.

I just purchased a 2001 4Runner SR5 4x4 with leather seats, supercharger, 3" ToyTec Boss lift kit, upgraded panhard bars, and automatic transmission that was fully serviced less than 20k miles ago for $8k. I had a hard time buying it for $8k except that it already has a S/C on it and great lift kit. IMO that made a $5k truck worth an additional $3k.

Just my two cents from a recent T4R shopper.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I posted a new CL ad at $5,500 or best offer. I'm not interested in being greedy or contentious, I simply posted this thread to understand the current market and how my truck was priced.
