I see all y'all detractors have forgotten the Gumbalf phenomenon...

That is not a primo 4runner, so I do think his price is high, and the mileage is low, but not crazy low. It's not a LTD, not locked, not fat lip bumper, not leather, not a value increasing color (no insult to anyone who likes this color...), chromed, 6-spoke wheels, etc., so that's why I say the price is a bit high.

That said, his price isn't THAT crazy. If this was a fully loaded, fully stock 4runner, I'd say the price is about right. But it does have some key features, 4WD, sun roof, and those are the 2 biggest for value add IMO.

Anyway, if it were Cali, I'd think he'd sell it without too much trouble, but in CO, might be a bit tougher. CO is a good market for these, but I don't think it's as good a market for the "high end" of these 4runners. At least not as good as Cali is.

If he's willing to sit on it and wait for the right buyer, then more power to him. No surprise if his rig is not worth the money he's asking to anyone here. This forum attracts do-it-yourself-ers, not people who take it to a dealer for oil changes.

I still remember gumball. Wasnt his listed at 18500? I dont know how much he sold it for, but I know he made a killing on it. What amazes me is that someone out there is willing to pay that much for this vehicle. Even if I were stupid wealthy I wouldnt pay that price. And yeah, youre probably right. If he is willing to wait it out, at some point someone will probably offer they seller pretty close to what hes asking. I know my truck has 235k miles, but man, Ive got all kinds of nifty modifications. By that logic shouldnt I be able to sell mine for around 12K?? That would be nice

I also agree that it wouldn't surprise me if he got that price or real close to it. I know if that was out here, they would definitely get close to that asking price if they were patient enough. It's crazy. The value of something doesn't come from what people say it's worth, but what people are willing to pay for it.

If it were a 99, manual, leather, locker, with the same mileage, and exterior color was black, I would give him 13500.

I agree with both sides though. For me personally, it would make much more sense to buy a 3rd gen with more miles for a lot less, then spend that saved money on a supercharger, suspension, tires, etc. But like Nelson said, this truck will attract a niche buyer who will appreciate the truck for being unmolested and having such low miles and want to keep it as is

I thought that too, but after hearing stories from my sister (she's a financial advisor for very wealthy people out in LA) about them calling her to ask if they can buy a ferrari they saw on the lot as they passed by, or other more crazy junk like that, I don't believe that anymore. Some of them are self-made millionaires, and can make money at will, but they don't have great self control in personal finances and they just hire someone to manage all that and keep them personally solvent.

It's a weird phenomenon, but it keeps my sis in the good life...

You could of course. But you would never buy this. The guy that buys this will be someone who loves this specific vehicle for some reason (maybe had one as a teen, and now a made-man with enough money that we won't miss $16k that much) and wants to buy one new, but obviously can't. For him, this is a good deal because he isn't a car guy and doesn't want/can't spend the time or have the knowledge to do the work himself. All the work you describe at a shop would be pushing the total investment over his asking price.

Its going to be very hard for him to find "that one guy" that loved 4runners so much he will get ripped off on a not really that low mileage 4runner. He is smarter than that. LOL. He will buy the 2002 with 100k miles for around $7-$9k and love it just as much. I know this cause ive seen these type of vehicles sit on craigs for over a year and drop from $16k to $9k before being sold.

Debatable. Some people want an untouched and totally stock 3rd gen, they are a pretty good all-rounder when they are stock. I'd prefer getting leather, locker, and 5-speed for that price. Assuming that this one drives like a fresh 3rd gen, this guy will get his money and a guy with the dough will have a nice 3rd gen to add to his collection.

On that note, I'm willing to sell my '97, Anthracite Metallic, SR5, V6, 4wd, 5-speed, E-locker, factory Oak leather, Moonroof, premium sound, rear heater, block heater, larger optional wheels, tires, and brakes, for 20k.

It has about double the miles of the 4Runner in the add, but it has no frame rust, unlike the 4Runner in the ad, and from the nasty old brake fluid in the 4Runner in the ad, I can tell mine has been better maintained.

That's crazy! I bought this one family owned 02 4wd 4runner with 87k miles this past December for $5800. Just needed a r/rear axle seal & brake shoes to pass state inspection.

No problem with overpricing the item and see if someone bites. If not, lower the price over time until you find a taker.

There's a nearly spotless (call it unmolested, no lift, running boards), medium mileage millennium silver 99-02 near me with 9800 on the window. I still say its too much. that said, hes gotta have a number somewhere lower than that, that's his actual bottom line. theres no way that thing goes for 16. maybe in 2004...
