Did my first timing belt job on a 5vzfe today.

Congratulations!!

Try to avoid GMB water pumps and aftermarket bearings. Go with Genuine toyota parts.

I am going to help my neighbor to get the T-belt and all that done sometime soon on his Tacoma.
I didn't know much about the gmb stuff. The oems seemed in good shape and probably could've left them. The gmb seemed well made. It doesn't get driven so I'm sure it's ok.

as far as the water pump not needing to be changed...YOURER ALREADY IN THERE!!! Might as well change it especially for what they cost. And on that note, do everything else under that cover as well...cam seals, tensioners (not being broke doesnt mean they arent weakened from time and stress), bearings, idlers...all of it!

Good job on doing it yourself! I'm debating this, but I dont really want to pay the dealer $1800 to do mine again!

$1800 seems like a lot. What else did they do?

It's not uncommon to do the TB and not a WP in a Toyota V6 the first time around at 90k. All Toyotas v6 WP are very stout, I had a 1MZ Camry with almost 200K on the original WP, first timing belt change was at 90k with no WP at the dealer. Of course in a 15 year old truck, if it's never been done that's a different story.

Changing cam and crank seals when there is no leakage could precipitate a leak. I've discussed the issue with many Toyota master techs and mostly their feeling is that if it's not leaking, leave well enough alone. You gamble either way, don't change and have a leak, or change and end up with a leak that wasn't there prior. Of course if you are on your 3rd TB change, and never been done I would do it.

I agree, but figured, at 138,000 miles, might as well. They never said anything and were more than happy to take my money. You have a point of creating a leak that wasnt there (the old addage "if it isnt broke, dont fix it") "But, mah Pappy always tawt me to do it right and do it once! Or id git a woopin." So, I had then do everything under the cover while they were there.
