Did you buy the extended warranty when you bought your used 4R?

Have you used it. If so, on what? At what mileage did you use it?

If you have not used it, how many miles and how long have you had your 4R?

I am trying to gather some info on whether I should buy the extended warranty for mine since today will be the second trip to the dealership I bought it from for a CEL.

I did not buy an extended warranty when I purchased my '05 V6 w/ 70k miles back in September of 2010. I drive almost 35k miles a year, so it just wasn't worth it for me. It's kind of a gamble buying any used vehicle, but I did make sure to check service history and common warranty items like the tcase actuator and such. The only thing that makes me nervous is that I doubt the engine was ever broken in correctly, and I doubt the first few oil changes were done at the recommended intervals. I've been reading a few threads about the V6 blowing up, and I'm scared! I am comfortable doing almost any work on my truck, except for an engine swap!

I also had a bunch of CELs come on within a week of having the truck... got the code read at AutoZone for free (small vapor leak), then tried reseating the gas cap and clearing the CEL by diconnecting the battery, but that didn't work. A new cap solved the problem though. Also, the Lexus dealership that I bought it from was very willing to make it right had the gas cap not done the trick. This at least gave me the confidence to drive the truck hard during the 60 day warranty period to potentially uncover any underlying issues.

I have an '07 v6 bought certified used in May 2008. Oh yea, glad I did too. Around 45K my mileage/ temp cluster light went out. Instead of just replacing the bulb, it was replaced and covered under the Toyota Extra Care. Part cost = $1,100. Then today I took her in with 57K to have the power window motor on the passenger side replaced. Will again be covered by the Extra Care. Part ordered. Probably will be another $300 when its all said and done. :wow2:

I have a 06 SR5, bought certified in may 09 with 23k, I purchased the extended warranty back then . It now has 51k, and I just got the truck back from service for 2 cats gone bad, manager said it was about 2k in work. I dont know if manufacturers or the extra care covered it. But I didn't pay a dime. IMHO I think its worth it, on my slo-lara, solara, I brought it in right before it hit 100 k and they replaced 2 engine mounts under the extra care. It always seems to pay itself off for me. SO until I get screwed I will keep buying it, from toyota at least.

No, I bought a 4Runner partly because of the reliability I believe these trucks have.

That and most maintenance I can do myself for a fraction of the cost of what an extended warranty would have cost.

Extended warranties are always a gamble one way or the other though.

Buy a code reader from Amazon for about $20. Save yourself a lot of time and money. Pull the code and make a note of it, then clear it and google the error.
Most are simple.

Usuallly I don't, but I found a deal from Toyota for a platinum warranty for about $800. Doesn't take much on the 4R to have a repair costing 1K.
Haven't had to use it yet.

I also didn't purchase the warranty...didn't see the value with the mileage my 4R had. I wont take it to the dealership to get worked on b/c they charge way to much. If I can't fix it myself I have a mechanic that has done work on my cars over the years that does great work and is very reasonable.

Bought my 05' Sport 4x4 w/ 108k miles and no extended warranty. Have not regreted it...No break downs, no repairs at all with 130k on the ticker. I feel better w/ the V8 knowing the history of the engine and that it's been proven as very reliable.

I just picked up my runner last weekend and decided not to get it. I feel Toyota's reliability is sufficient for me not to get one (its the reason i bought a 4Runner). I would only buy extended warranty on a car that is expensive to maintain (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc).

I just purchased my 2008 4R 4wd w/40K on it & yes I got it certified with 100k warranty on everything "Platinum warranty"

T4R was not certified when I looked at it & it was an added bonus if I purchased the T4R !

I definitely bought the extended warranty, but then again when stuff goes wrong I'm the kind of guy that just wants to drop it off at the dealer and pick it up fixed for no charge. Maybe if I didn't live in an apartment and had some room to do repairs myself I might have gone another way.

No, I didn't buy the friggin' extended warranty. I never buy extended warranties on anything. Generally you are throwing your money away. They make a ton of money on those -- extremely profitable. That's why they push them so hard.

Sure, they pay off now and then. But statistically, you are better off to keep the money in your pocket, which ... I personally do.

I bought my (wife's) '06 new in April of '06. I didn't get an extended warranty. I've always planned to do some type of suspension mod and a few other things. Most warranty plans are void whenever you do anything beyond stock. Sure some will overlook things, but others will tell you your radio failed because of the size of tire you're running. Another note for my situation specifically, the truck only has 47,000 miles after nearly 5 years. My wife babies it more than me.
My Dad and brother have both had bad experiences. Dad had a Tercel that refused to run smoothly. Toyota sent in the "district rep" and they tried but could not get it to run properly. It was past the bumper to bumper warranty, so we argued that it should be resolved under the longer power-train warranty (i.e. engine doesn't work). Resolved, but not without hassles. My brother has had problems with getting his Tacoma fixed under warranty from a dealer other than the one he purchased the truck from (as a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle). He had to go to a "district rep" to complain. It was resolved, but left us with a bad experience with warranties. I've written about this before on the forum - kinda my pet peeve. Don't get me wrong, great vehicles, warranties - not so much.

Got my 05 as a PreCertified in April 2010. To seal the deal, they sold me the bumper to bumper extended warranty for $800 (value at $1600.....IIRC). She was "new to me" @ 72K. I used the warranty for a very scuffed wheel. I had them repair it. She goes in on Thursday for state inspection, transmission drain/fill and for what I suspect is a sticky brake caliber (or axle). She's at 81K now.

I wasn't going to get the extended warranty b/c I got the truck knowing its very reliable, but the price of it was too good. So far, I'm happy (that I haven't had to use it).

peace of mind ...what is it worth to you, some see it as the dealer making extra cash off of you..big deal if you can aford it ,why not.... the stats show most dont need it; that is true to a degree..... those who dont buy it ,don't post when something goes wrong and it is out of their pocket either

We didn't, but we bought it with 67,000 miles on it, so don't qualify for the Toyota warranty, only aftermarket. If we could get the Toyota warranty, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I've heard horror stories about aftermarket warranties, and they wanted over $2,000 for not very good coverage....

I'm pretty sure if you bought it at a dealership they were required to offer it at the sale. I bought a 2006 a few months ago with 45,000 and they gave me the $800 warranty deal.
