Yes, but suppose you did not buy at a dealership or you did buy at a dealership and turned down their offer? Can you buy the extended warranty afterwards?

I purchased my 08 T4R w/40K on it at the end of january, it was not certified & it was marked AS IS no warranty & it was at a toyota dealership
I asked if I purchased the 4R could it be Certified & would there be a warranty and the Dealership said yes. I walked away with it being certified and 100K Platinum warranty ,therefore I purchased it.
I traded in a 2009 TX Edtion Silverado with 100K warranty with 29K on it, if the 4R had no warranty I would not of purchased it; as good of a track record Toyota has, all it takes is one costly repair to never hear the end of it from a spouse & if single , to be kicking yourself for months to come.IMO

I bought my 06 T4R sport w/ 50,000 miles on it and I also bought the warranty. I haven't had to use it. But for me it is mainly for all the electronics and the XREAS, I don't have the time or expertise to fuss around with it if it ever goes. I know I will be better off with aftermarket suspensions, but back to not having the time or sometime not having the funds to do it too.

Bought my certified used 04 in 08 w/ 65K km's (40K miles). Extended powertrain warranty just ran out last Sept. It came with the truck as it was certified used, but I wouldn't have bought if it would have cost me anything, that's why I buy a Toyota.
I was at 100K kms' when it ran out (60K miles). Never used it once. Still had 20K km's left but time ran out first.

Good idea. I wouldn't recommend an aftermarket warranty on a T4r: the payback (economic value) on a $2k warranty looks really bad. I didn't think the OEM extended warranty would pay off, but we bought it anyway and it has not paid for itself at 102k miles.
To date, we used it for: seized front caliper (common problem, check them before purchasing) and front CV boots (arguably, a common problem).
Anecdotal (forum and personal) evidence seems to show that catastrophic failure (engine, transmission, transfer-case, etc.) is rare. With $2k in the bank you can do a lot of the less-than-catastrophic repairs as needed. Keep in mind, the t4r is not known to be a vehicle that nickel-and-dimes you to death (again, anecdotally). Now, our old Audi and Jeep GC, those could bleed you dry with many little issues--we sold those before they went out of warranty.
That's why I buy toyota! I just wrecked an 04 tacoma single cab with about 65k on the clock. I was really sad to see that one go. I only replaced wear items on that truck and it only cost 8-9 cents per mile in gas to run it. I thought I would step up to a 4runner this time and hope I didn't make a mistake. It's been back to the FORD dealer I bought it from twice for a CEL. The 60 day dealer warranty runs out next week.

You're buying peace of mind in all honesty. If you can afford to tuck the money away somewhere safe for a rainy (rusty?) day then that's probably a better answer, but not everyone has that discipline and repairs always seem to strike when you can least afford them from my experience (my biggest bills so far have always been Dec and Jan - go figure..)
I purchased a certified 07 with 43,000 mi T4R Friday before Christmas after a 4 month search. With all my looking, talking and researching I’m still learning a lot conflicting to what I thought or was told.
1. Toyota Dealerships are privately owned vs by the Toyota Corp or both??
2. There is no Extended Warranty starting at 2nd date vs orig purchase by Toyota or after markets (drive-train or bumper-to-bumper).
3. The cost of the warrantees and requirements varies vs being standardized per dealers.
4. What I purchased was represented as Toyota‘s extended, now Toyota and the aftermarket are denying coverage.
5. Certified is not living up to its advertisement. Have you seen the 160 point inspection results and repairs that qualified your T4R to be certified?
6. I feel Toyotas have good qualities after owning 2 certified Camrys that only needed routine services over 100,000 mi.
7. If the extended coverage and No deductible if serviced at the selling dealer are true, I’ll expect explanations. jow

I feel an extended warranty is more important on a pre owned purchase vs a new purchase. My daughter just purchased a 2010 Highlander an extended comprehensive bumper-to-bumper warranty would have been 3,000. My suggestion was to put the 3,000 in her savings etc.. I feel more of a risk with pre owned depending on the cost and year model involved. Plus, my 40 years of enjoying repairing and rebuilding is not as much fun. LOL. BUT! Being manipulated is not fun either. It has been a good balance with new ext warr adding peace of mind @ 1,000 ea on 2 Camrys. Then, 2 yrs approx 500.00 ext warr on 4-5 year old cars paid for the ext warr in full in repairs but mentally frustrating work. Good Luck With This Game! jow
