Different size spare on LE

I won't dispute that there is an "abundance of caution" in the post and I'll even admit that the driveline would likely be fine if it was only for a short period. However, I don't think anyone can legitimately argue that driving with one wheel almost half an inch smaller than the other three wheels on a car does anything but put extra (i.e. unneeded) stress on the system.

I would argue that you could drive it like that for 100,000 miles without hurting anything. Do I have proof? No. I doubt you do either though, lol.

These things are tough. Differentials are built to , well, differentiate. It's all good.:thumb3:

You win. 100 points to you today. I bet you use coasters for your beer lol.

I had two semesters of differential equations. I know about differentials.

Remember math and alcohol don't mix: Please don't drink and derive...

I had two semesters of differential equations. I know about differentials.

The first "real" R/C car I built (Tamiya Frog) had an open diff. I would hold one wheel in my hand and give it full power to watch the spinning tire grow to like 8" in diameter. I would do this for hours to see if it would break (I was weird with stuff like that).

Guess I should have been a durability tester...

Point is, I know about differentials too.:yield:

Well good to see this wasn't a dumb question... :thumb3:

Thank you all. I didn't think it would hurt anything according to how I understood things worked, but wanted to see what the collective thought was.

I think I'll stick with the spare until I can find someone selling a cheap toyota wheel and LT tire I can then swap it out for. While I don't think it would hurt anything driving on the 20 inch, if I did get a flat someplace remote and rough, I would want to put the P rated tire on there.

BTW, still laughing about the coaster for your beer comment. I'm stealing that....

Honestly, I'd disagree. I think the threat to an LSD with different sized tires is sustained high-speed highway driving (which is what I imagine a lot of TX to be)

Maybe we're busy trying to juice a turnip here, but "sustained high-speed highway driving" with a spare is >>>> using a spare that has a slightly different diameter, for a short time, when in need.

I don't know if it would be relevant for a 4Runner, but I do remember having an issue with a different sized spare on a Jeep Cherokee. This was about 20 years ago, so I probably don't have the details correct.

We were driving my buddy's Cherokee, not the Grand Cherokee, on a trail to get somewhere. I believe his was full time 4wd and he had it in a locked mode, maybe similar to H4L in the 4Runner LE or perhaps he was even in low range. Anyways he hit a rock and destroyed the sidewall of a tire. His spare was slightly smaller than his other 4 tires, I don't remember by what but he had all seasons on and not AT tires.

We finished up the off road portion of the day, and when back on road the Jeep would not disengage the 4wd lock. This was before cell phones with Internet and we were many miles from home, so we got on the FWY. Even at under 60 MPH you could tell something was wrong with the drive train and the Jeep was not happy.

We decided to pull over and try to get it out of lock mode, the only way we could get it to come out of lock mode was to go from Forward to Reverse back and forth several times under power.

So perhaps if you are off road in 4 Low or H4L and have to change to a different sized spare you may not be able to disengage the differential lockup or get back into normal driving mode.

Please be kind, I just thought I would relay an experience I had in a different type of vehicle that is probably not relevant. When/if I downsize my LE wheels from 20 to 17 inch I plan on doing all 5 wheels so I can rotate all 5 per the manual and not have to worry about size differences.

That is really good info. I do plan on getting the same size eventually with a used tire and cheap wheel btw.
