Digging into the 22RE

LOL......

Kid,

remove the exhaust and the intake, you've already removed all the head bolts but there is one more under the upper timing chain sprocket. it is like a 12mm and usually down in the oil unseen and goes into the top of the timing cover. My guess is that you have a broken rod and that is why you cant turn the motor over. Be glad that your block doesn't have a window in it (usually under the exhaust manifold). Now is a great time to do a motor swap, there are a bunch to choose from but I like the 3.4 toyota or my favorite a 5.0HO. Good luck and I hope I'm wrong.

Sam

You forgot to feed the squirrels, didn't you! I agree about the swap--if you've been considering it, this is the time to do it. Why throw money into an engine you'd rather not have? Something like the 3.4 would be sweet, and would probably not be too difficult to swap (relatively speaking--any swap can be a pain). I was about to ask about removing the oil pan, but then I remembered you have IFS--that will make that a pain. You'd know really quick from down there if a rod gave up the ghost. Best of luck, partner!

I might have a line on a 22R short block. I'd reuse my Compcams camshaft and order a Street head from engnbldr. Are my EFI bits pretty much plug and play on the 22R block, or would there be machining and other nasty work to have done?

I have a rebuilt 22RE head for sale cheap if you need one. Was going to use it on my 22R but it's the wrong year and won't fit.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there is a difference in deck height on early 22r's and later i think its 84 and later are taller and 83 back is short=same as 20r thats why 20r dual timing chain works on the early block and not on a later block

Drained the oil - no chunks, no shavings. It was a little black for having just changed it a month or so ago, but still no signs of catastrophe.

Got the upper plenum wrestled off. Holy bleeding balls is that a PITA. If I do end up having to reinstall the 22RE, that emissions crap is gone, and I'll find a place out of county to register the truck so I don't have to screw with emissions testing.

Lower plenum and the exhaust bolts to go.

This 10 year old JB Weld patch finally let go, so whatever happens I'll need a radiator. Any recommendations for better-than-stock?

Yes there is a difference, don't remember which years though.

More JB weld?

Hurry and get that engine outta there. I'm really curious to see wtf was going on.

Working on it. The rain stopped as soon as I got around to throwing a tarp up...

Which bolt am I missing? Don't tell me it's underneath at the firewall, or I'm going to go punch a nun in the face.

You're violent! Kicking puppies, punching nuns...

The last bolt you're missing is in your last pic. It's a pain to get to but it's right behind that 90* elbow that the coolant line goes to. You can see the head of the bolt in your last pic.

Whatinthhell is it doing right there? That's like a 1/2inch from the other one, what flippin' good is that doing besides driving me up a fricking wall???

Ok, thanks. Off to go wrestle another damned coolant line. Grr.

Going to be more fun putting her back together :roadkill:

It won't be this bad. I'm probably not going to repair this one, I'll be replacing it with a Putneys long block or swapping to a 7M-GE. Either way, most of the assembly is going to happen on a stand where I can actually get my meaty hands in those little corners.

Keep the pics comin

In addition to the one SV pointed out, it turns out there IS another one in the back, under the plenum. There's no way to get a socket on it. It took one of my neato little flexy-head ratcheting box ends to get to it - those things have got to be the best $40 I've ever spent on tools. No nun-punching required.

A trick I learned a while ago and forgot to use is to go buy a gasket, or find a picture of one on line. All the little holes tell you exactly where the bolts are. I spaced that until just now.

Okay, now what? It's still not loose. This damned thing needs to do what I tell it to do when I tell it to do it.
