Digging into the 22RE

So, guess what I found.

How did this not lead to me dumping oil all over the road?

Piston 1:

3 is dry, with loose debris all over the surface of the piston. 4 has what looks and feels like coolant, and is filthy to boot, with caked-on muck.
 
At this point, coolant in your pistons will be normal. You have coolant routing through your block and head. When you pulled the head, some of the coolant will fall into the pistons. But that hole in your block... that's another story. Time for the motor swap :)
 
sorry to see that but that is what i was worried about. Window in the block is no bueno. But on the bright side now you can really do a swap and have more power. :flamethrwoer2:

That's a bummer man! If you want to keep it 22re powered there is a local guy around me who sells toyota engines with lifetime warranties! He sells stuff on his ebay account as well.

NOOOO! Google that rebuilder. I don't know much but I've heard a lot of bad things about them. They offer a generous guarantee but never honor it. And their craftsmanship is poor. Sorry if he's your friend.

Engine Bldrs kits off eBay are supposed to be good and for entire engines there's a place called Sunwest Specialties or something like that and there's others.
 
One good source for 1st-3rd Gen engines and parts is "toyotacarpart.com" out of Colorado Springs. I have personal experience with them, and I would trust them again. Excellent prices and warranties, and good service. Four-bangers and V-6's, long or short blocks, heads, etc..
 
Hey, Sorry to hear about your engine but you did a great job of the thread. Have you thought about a 3RZ swap? It's got the weight of a 22RE but 150 HP. I think that's the way I'd go unless a diesel dropped from the sky.

I've never heard anything bad about ORE myself, but if I put another 22RE in I'll be talking to Putnams about one of their stage 2.5 longblocks.

Why'n hell do I owe Dude beers, now?

I always knew I wanted to do a swap when this motor gave out, but I expected that to be 10 years from now, you know?
