Diode Dynamics SS3 Fog Light Kit Installed

Just bought a set for my ‘15 limited too. Read your post about accessibility for the one bolt. Which side was that? Dealer said he though bumper cover may need to be removed. Can you please lmk any details of the install that may help me decide whether to install or return them. Thanks!

You can do it without removing the bumper. You have to remove a few connectors on the splash guards and pull them back though.

I recommend tightening the lights within their brackets until you can barely move them by hand. Once installed, you can aim them from outside the bumper by pushing the top or bottom. Trying to loosen and tighten the inside bolt to change the aim is the wrong way to do it.

Passenger side has an extra section of plastic that limits accessibility. The chrome foglight surrounds can be removed from the bumper without removing the bumper and the foglights installed, and then re-install the entire unit, but accessing the clips from behind can be tricky. I've never removed the front bumper on my 5th gen, but I've seen people comment it takes about 5 min once you know how...if I was doing it again I might just pull the bumper if that's the case, lol.

I removed the wheels to install the SS3 fog lights, spray paint the bump stop strike plates, and spray much of the undercarriage with WD 40 blast.

I pulled the liner on both sides, the plastic shield on the pax side lamp takes a flat head screwdriver as someone mentioned earlier (thanks!) to pry out. Also as mentioned, re-installing it is a little tricky: access is awkward in that area.

The gap everyone mentions is HUGE per se but presumably you are installing this for better lightning, not looks. I don't see why water or mud or sand would be an issue: they would just get into a wide open area. When you go through mud or water, it would be getting to the same places from below anyway.

The adjustment is up/down, very easy, can even be adjusted from outside, which is great!

We will see if they move when offroading though and also if the plastic shield falls off. That would not surprise me, lol.

We will see tonight how well they work around town. In my garage, the fog lights are well below the headlights so I guess they should be fine in terms of adjustment.

About to order and can’t decide if I want amber or white. I think amber looks cool and has a lot more benefit in poor weather, but not sure I will like them on a daily. Anyone have thoughts on that??

These are definitely more yellow than amber, but being skeptical as well and this being my first set of yellow fogs, I was impressed. The other day I was driving through thick fog and my sport ss3s were awesome. Especially in snow, the yellow is great to improve visibility. As far as the look on my daily driver, I'm super pleased with them. Every now and then I find myself looking at them and enjoying it, and anytime I spot a stock 4runner with factory fogs I cringe. If you order them and change your mind later, you can replace the lenses.

I'm glad to hear you like your SS3 Sport fogs. If you think they're great, you ought to try the Pro, or better yet the Max fogs - like I have. Absolutely unbelievable amounts of usable light on the ground without being obnoxious to oncoming drivers.

Do you drive with them on all the time? Part of me feels like the amber will be a little distracting since I've never driven a vehicle with that color.

The selective yellow color is fantastic. Personally I find the pro 6000K to be a bit too blue (the pro uses 6400K Cree chips, while the sport uses much more neutral white 5700K Lumileds chips).

You can also get the yellow lights and swap in clear fog optics for a fantastic warm 4000K color. This is a bit closer to halogen lighting in color temperature, if you care about that at all.

Here are my SS3 driving lights- originally I had 6000K and switched to 4000K.

Sports bright enough??

I'll quote another post to save time:

All of them are street legal as a replacement fog, and all of them are strong choices at their respective price points (and true bargains when they're on sale). In fact, the 3 of them are the top recommendations in the fog pod shootout thread here, besting other brands like Rigid, KC HiLites, and Baja Designs:

The LED SAE J583 Fog Pod & Fog Light Review | Tacoma World

The sport is a great value with excellent intensity and coverage. The pattern also meets the newest J583 F3 spec with its sharp focus and cutoff. They use about 15W.

The pro uses larger, more powerful chips (more than twice the power, 36W) which results in a brighter, but less focused pattern (the emitters are larger than the focal point of the optics, which loosens the pattern somewhat). They still meet the older J583 F spec, so they are still road legal. They also run warmly enough to melt snow, which has long been a failure point for LED pods.

The max SS3 uses new Osram Boost HX chips that have insane amounts of intensity, but with the smaller chip footprint like the sport LEDs. So their intensity is greater than the pro but with the focus and cutoff of the sports. The chips themselves are rated at 20W each (80W), which would be insane- but the heatsink capacity of the lights limits the pods to about 38W. They too will melt snow, and meet the older J583 F spec.

Personally I find the white lamps to be a touch too blue, so I prefer the yellow ones for fog use. For my driving lights (street legal auxiliary high beams) in the grill, I use the SS3 driving pattern. For a warmer 4000K white, I used the yellow lights and swapped in clear optics. Everything on the front of the truck is street legal (the roof lights are off road only).

I think the yellow looks cool, but I don't get much bad weather other than some rain here in Dallas and I don't know if I will like the yellow on a daily basis. I think I'm going to go with the white Pro's.

Just ordered my white Pro's. I will give a review here soon. I chose the white because I think the yellow would be weird on a daily basis. I also chose the white because I will swap my headlights with the 2021 LED's when a set becomes available.

With the 15% off this weekend I ordered the SS3 pros in amber to replace the stock fogs on our 19. I hope I am not disappointed. We just had a Extreme LED 30 inch X6s show up to go in the bumper that is getting built so I might be good on lights, I wouldn't mind adding 2 more pods in white or some LP6's.

If anyone wanted to know the difference between the stock LED fogs and the Pro’s here it is. I like how the Pro’s are not as clean of a cutoff. It really throws a little extra light up to light up signs, but doesn’t seem to bother oncoming traffic.

Good side by side comparison. Speaking as one who had the Pro and went to the Max, the Max has the same tight horizontal pattern as the sport, but even more power than the Pro - if you can imagine that.

I went back and forth about whether or not to upgrade to the yellow max to the pro, and I think I'm gonna stick with pro. The increase in intensity is just not as drastic as it is with the white fog light, and I appreciate the extra pattern coverage (listed below).

Sport: 78x8° (9,800 Candela)
Pro: 90x12° (10, 900 Candela)
Max: 82x9° (12,500 Candela)

You can see the two compared on the isocandela plots here.

If Osram offered the boost HX emitters in a warmer tone, I would probably revisit. But for now I love the deeper, golden yellow that comes from the 4000K chips. Plus I've spent too much damn money on lights already.

Wait a minute. You mean it's possible to spend too much money on lighting? Please don't tell my wife. I have an agreement with her. She can spend as much as she wants on shoes as long as she doesn't question my spending on lighting.
