Dirtyfingers' build thread..

Now I'm jealous...sure wish I had one of those laying around...I'll be watching this one with baited breath.

I reserved some spots for the initial teardown kinda for my own documentation so I know where everything goes once I get the tundras heart and guts out into Lucky.

Here's a long lasted mod I did a while back, I added some better lights to my rear living area in the 4runner. It was my first time using a Dremel drill, while using it I actually had a cutting wheel break scaring the bajesus out of myself and 10ac haha.

Starting the cutting on the interior panels.

Here they are all mounted up and ready to be lit up. I used RTV to hold them in place just incase I had to replace one or more of them. You know. Think ahead and stuff.

Here they are nice and mounted, as well as lot up.

And a night picture!

The LEDs I used were off eBay and I got them for like 6 bucks per pair. I like them and the way I wired them up was to the door switch. I took out the white lighting in the back because it's just too bright at night and these being red take away from that blinding affect.

This thing is looking good man. I can't wait to see that v8 in there!

You and me both! Seems like history repeats itself, here I am ordering car parts being so far away from home. Just waiting here like a kid patiently waiting for for the chance to eat the freshly baked cookies. I just ordered the elocker harness.

Right? Haha if only, I did a roll on application.

Where did you get the paint? How long would you say it took. I really want to do this as I have scratched my paint all the hell on one side. My buddy has a cabin where I could do it if it only takes 2 days. Thanks for any info you may have.

It took me about three days to prep everything, and that includes taking door handles off and sanding the whole thing down to prep the surface. Once that was all done it took me about an hour to rub it all down with mineral spirits to get all the impurities out, after that was all done it took me about another hour to tape everything off, once that was done I was finally able to paint it, I rolled on the paint of course. I put one coat on and it sat for about 4 hours then I put a second coat on let that sit for a day then put a third coat on. I'm thinking about putting another coat on just for extra protection. All in all it took about 5 days. 2 days were actually spent painting. The paint I got was from monstaliner magnetic paints. I got 3 gallons of desert sand tan, and 1 gallon of black.

Well it's been a long few weeks, been running around and figuring out everything for my new job/location. Still in San Diego. I've had a little while to catch the 4runner up on maintenance and just all around fixing little things. The supercharger is off and the tundra is at my house and I'm currently underway on working on taking it apart. Already have everything needed to swap. Here's some pictures of the shenanigans!

This was all at Otay or whatever you call it

This was the same place but a different day, the last hurrah of my supercharger.

Then I went ahead and put my snorkel on that I got.

And my secret Santa present I used as a reverse light!

I also got my elocker ready to get put in too

That pretty much warps it up. I've been working on the swap, I'm figuring my way around this fly by wire deal so hopefully it will be able to get done soon. Stay tuned and look back at my other pages if you want to see the tear down of the tundra come to play.

Well I've been working pretty diligently on the engine swap, I've been following Singtoe's build thread on most of it but also throwing in my own twist on things. Over all the swap has been pretty straight forward, I ended up getting the tundra with the fly by wire, I'll be using a 2wd computer but still maintaining my 4wd capabilities. I'll go more into detail when I get it done, but it'll be very helpful to those who are trying to do 4wd conversions later on or something. Anyways here's some pictures.

This was the last picture I took of it before it put it under that wrench, bittersweet because now I can't drive it.

Extended the driver side exhaust manifold an inch and a half.

Cut my radiator support and got it ready to pull out

Then I pulled out the engine and started some rust prevention. I was actually jumping when I took this picture...no big deal.

And here's my 5vz pulled out, I'm selling the radiator and my entire exhaust off of it, make me an offer on the radiator, the exhaust is the single cat flowmaster 10 dumped right before the axle, it's super loud... Like really really loud...if you're interested pm me, comes with O2 sensors too. Local pickup only please.

Here's the end of the exhaust and how it sits.

Here's some more pictures of me taking out the engine from the tundra and then some.

Pulling the engine out of the tundra, the only reason I took off the AC pump was because I needed some more clearance. Only do it as you see fit haha.

The engine and transmission making up the whole power train...

The engine, for those that aren't too mechanically inclined, is connected to the torque converter via six 14mm bolts. You have to bar the engine over to get them all out and hold the engine while you unfasten them, here's a basic picture of the flywheel

Once you get it off you can take the transmission off as well...given you took the bolts out of the bell housing to the engine. After that there are 6 bolts that once you take the torque converter off are exposed. After that you have torn down the transmission. What follows is something I'm not going to go into detail too much because I don't really know what I'm talking about so I'm not going to talk about it.

I think this is the oil pump or something I'm not sure, but once you get that out of the way there are the internals of the transmission, it's the same for both transmissions. There's an orbital, or planetary gear in there that is pretty much the only thing you can get to with out using retaining ring pliers. I haven't torn into it further though...

This is the picture you can better see the retainer that I'm talking about it holds in the clutches and pretty much everything else. This is a very strenuous process because the transmission is built very precisely. So don't mess up. This is how the transmission looks with the first component removed...

Planetary gear removed

That's about it. Pretty tired...think I'll go home now.

Great progress. This maybe a dumb question, but why do you have to take the tundra tranny apart?

I'm swapping all the internals of the tundras tranny to the 4runners tranny. The tundra is a 2wd unfortunately. But I got it for cheap as hell so I can't complain.

Ate the tundra internals geared differently? I thought the tundra motor bolted right up to the a340.

How much you asking?

I'm super jealous of the V8 swap. I have a 2004 5.3 with 40k on it and a fresh 4l60 trans just sitting around. I'm afraid I'll blow out the front diff if I do a V8 swap.

Hey guys got some updates for y'all engine is in, and I did some extra work on certain things but here's the engine mounted up finally and ready to be running.

Radiator test fitted.

The tranny had to have the output shafts swapped out don't want to go into that but here's the picture of the new tranny mounted up to the tcase bell housing,

And since the engine pushed the tranny and friends further back I had to modify the shifter bracket, I cut the rear of it and got it right where it needs to be.

That's about it, here's a teaser pic of my bumper too.

I also did the water pump and timing belt while the radiator was out. But no pictures of that.
