dirty's 86 runner

dirty dangler

I bought my first 4runner after realizing i wasn't going to be able to fit 2 car seats into my single cab ranger. Well i immediately fell in love with the versatility of the runner. Being able to fit the kids in the truck, sleep in it and not to mention Toyota reliability. I started with a 3rd gen 98 4x4, next was a 2nd gen 95 4x4. blew the 3.slow in the 95 so i was left with a decision. Throw in a 2jz and swap the factory 4link for leafs or start with a new truck. I always liked the look of first gen runners and the fact that you can remove the top. And having leafs would make life a lot easier. So the decision was easy...first gen it was. Found a bone stock 86 with a rebuilt 22re and 5 speed manual for a decent price and the build is on

Hell of a truck. I love the way you huck that thing around.
thanks bud!! she is fun to fly thats for sure
Its amazing how fast you can get it going with the 22re (yes i know its light but still interesting in that sand)
as long as i keep up the rpm's and leave it in 4x the little 22re does pretty good for what it is. on a flat long section i can get her up to around 60 which isnt too bad

So I am curious what springs you have in the rear?
I had Deaver build me a set that they designed and they were of 13 leafs for mine and I flattened them out on the first trip out - well when done they only had 4" of bump left -, they rebuild them and now I have 15 leafs, sits exactly where I wanted them and they are SWEET!!!!
My 4Runner does weigh 2800 on the rear axle - total not unsprung - and it is at 3100 loaded with all my guns and ammo on a trip. :)
Thanks!!
And as always great pictures!!!

Sweet 4runner! It's nice to see you do up a build thread. I have been wondering what all you had done to it. You need a 7mgte motor, a turbo inline 6 would be SWEET in your rig!!

I had deaver build me a custom pack as well. Ill check when i get home as i cant remember if they were 11 or 13 leafs. when i had these designed jeff at deaver and i went through every aspect of what i wanted the end result to be and i must admit he nailed it right on the head. We talked about ride height, spare tire amount and location, how many passengers and gear do i typically carry and my final cage design. I have beat the living piss out of these springs and they honestly only settled and inch or two tops. If you are going into negative arch with your springs then thats probably why they flattened out so fast. Do you know if they go into a negative arch at full bump?

super sick ass rig man!!!
thanks bud

thanks man!! im honestly stuck between keeping the all mighty 22re, 7mgte or 2jzgte. i love the fact that i can run the 22re at 5-7k rpm all day long and shes happy as a clam, great gas mileage and parts are cheap and easy to come by. But im a hp guy and the 22re just doesnt do it for me. i understand that the 7m is a much cheaper swap but i feel that if im gonna spend any time or money swapping motors then i might as well do it right the first time and go for the hp im looking for in the 2jz. hell a 2jz with some goodies will easily get me 400 hp and still be pretty reliable. Still a ways out though as my 22re only has about 12-15k after the last rebuild and i just got done doing the OSK timing chain ,new injectors and all the other tune up goodies. WE shall see

I chatted with Jeff on mine also he did a T-76 pack first after taking all that into consideration, but after they flattened I sent him some pictures of shackle angle and at bump the leaf goes level and never into negative arch at full bump - and then I told him what the rear weighed - 3100lbs -, it was "Yes, that is going to need some more" so he updated them and it is now perfect!!! I just need to go beat on it some more now.
I ended up with 16" Bumped and strapped with the new ones all under the back.
I have been curious what yours were and what the back of your weighed in at.

THANKS!!!!

i ended up strapped at 18 with a couple inches left before negative arch...once i tub the rear fenders and change my strike pad for the bump stop i should be at 20-21. havent had a chance to weight it at all though. are you bumping off the axle or somewhere else? just curious about the angle of the bumps

This thing is sick!!
thanks man
I know one improvement I'd like to see...lol
me too....a ktt top and you in the passenger seat screaming for mercy haha
