Disable ABS on older 3rd gens!

I been waiting to do this, today I had some spare time so I decided to go for it.

I dont have the patience for a write up and it was honestly too simple to deserve one.

All of the other ABS off mods are for 4runners with the weird brake booster piston thing.

All mine takes is splicing one wire and running it to a switch in the cab.

Look under the hood for the relay panel it's on the drivers side.

Last fuse/relay with the clear top is ABS you can see a bolt connecting it on the back of it.

Re rout this wire to a switch in the cab and back to the fuse. Very simple, works great.

This wire does run into the cab but I wasn't able to track it so I spliced it under the relay box.

i did this last week on my 97. i didn't really want to splice into the fuse since all of the current for the abs (which is a lot) goes through the fuse. instead, i spliced into a wire in abs pump connector and put a normally closed push button switch in the dash. so when i push it, it breaks the circuit and the abs computer triggers a fault and turns on the abs light and disables the system. then to reenable, i just restart the truck. hardest part was getting the wires through the firewall

This was the first mod i did to my truck. I pryed out the relay and pulled the bulb. No need for abs with no snow and about a weeks worth of rain a year.

actually snow was where i didn't want abs. i want it for rain and dry pavement where it actually helps. with snow, it just makes it harder to stop

I hated it in snow too, it would pulsate and I would just keep on going. Ya, the elocker thing is a nice feature!

As a word of caution you should always re-install your ABS fuse when back on the paved road since there is a reason all cars have ABS and safety is the biggie and w/o ABS you could be putting your and other's lives in danger. ABS is especially useful on dry pavemetn and reduces stopping distance greatly vs skidding to a stop plus with ABS you still have steering control and that includes driving in snow.

ya i really like my abs on the road my last 4runnner had rear only abs ya that was a good idea once the front wheels lock up it's to late

My ABS would come on way too early. For instance, if there was a small patch of pine needles on the road and a car in front of me, it would activate, start pulsating and would not slow down nearly in time. I would have to give myself 3 or 4 times more stopping distance than an average car in every instance except completely dry and clean pavement. I took it to 3 dealerships, 3 different times and all said everything is normal.

I've almost crashed more times than I could count because the ABS kicked on prematurely and I swerved or hit the ebrake and slid sideways to avoid an accident. The earlier 3rd gens' ABS system is a joke and I'm positive I'm way safer w/o it. I think they just hadn't perfected it yet.

I do think the first couple of years of 4Runners the ABS might have been rear only but I do know mine ias all 4 wheels andwith ABS you do still have the ability to steer which without it the front wheels lock up and you'll simply go straight.

The ABS is just wierd on my 4runner (and possibly al '96-98s). I love it on my parents Ford Expedition and F-150 on snow or dry roads. My buddies Suburban's works great, so I think it's just my vehicle. I'm probably going to do the Tundra upgrade soon so maybe that will help??
