Disable ABS on older 3rd gens!

The ABS is just wierd on my 4runner (and possibly al '96-98s). I love it on my parents Ford Expedition and F-150 on snow or dry roads. My buddies Suburban's works great, so I think it's just my vehicle. I'm probably going to do the Tundra upgrade soon so maybe that will help??

Its not just yours brian2sun. I have a 98 and recently experienced my abs for the first time. Its ridiculous. I was going maybe 10mph coming to a stop, and literally one tire hit a small patch of ice, and i slid part way into the intersection. The three other tires were literally on solid pavement. The abs in my 98 taurus and moms 05 accord are much different . . . theyre actually beneficial. Im just gonna pull the fuse on mine. I am convinced that im safer without the abs. Being a sensible and cautous driver is what keeps one out of accidents, not abs.

I think that the slower you are going, the worse the ABS is. It definitely has prevented me from locking up all 4 wheels on the highway which IMO is a good thing.

Yeah, actually since that quote of mine back in Feb, I have come across dozens of other people who have had issues with their ABS on their 3rd gens.

As a matter of fact, I hit a patch of ice in my CR-V on the way to work this morning and it started to get a little sideways, the ABS kicked in and I was able to steer it back straight while braking. That was a great example of ABS working properly on a different vehicle. Had that been my 4runner, I would have continued at or near the same speed regarless of braking and regaining my steering at that speed would have been sketchy since my ABS lets my truck keep sliding. What a huge difference between how the ABS feels and works when I compare my CR-V to my 3rd gen.

After a couple of close calls with the ABS, I pulled the fuse and now enjoy safer driving.

I dare anyone to go down a steep sandy hill with ABS, or try to make a quick stop on pavement with gravel at the front tires and dry pavement at the rear tires.

There is nothing like hearing the tires squeal on the pavement, and nothing beats learning how to use your brakes properly...

There is not one human being on this planet that can react to locked up tires skidding faster than an ABS system can. No one, no matter how skilled you are or think you are. It is impossible. Learning to use your brakes properly is great, but still doesn't come close to matching what ABS can do. On pavement, wet or dry, ABS will always be able to stop you faster, with the added benefit of retaining some steering control.

Having said that, I agree that the 3rd gen system has its quirks. Mine seems to kick in early at low speeds on uneven terrain. Light braking when going over pot holes will trigger it sometimes. But since doing the Tundra brake upgrade, it doesn't happen as often.

I will have to disagree with you on this one, I know that I can stop faster with my abs off in all conditions. My abs is on a switch and I have tried. The abs on my 4runner is awful. Most things on a road will trip it and you basically have to hang on and let it stop before the brakes even work. A little sand, water, even pine needles in the road make my abs system go off. and in all the same conditions i can stop on a dime with it off.

And there may be something new about pulling the fuse. I read on pirate that if you also pull the abs relay and fuse you will not get the light on and the abs will be off

Wow, yours must be really bad. I don't like mine, but it does work well when I've needed it.
Perhaps I should alter my previous statement to say a 'normal properly functioning ABS system......' etc

Maybe it got a little better on the newer 4runners. Every early 3rd gen seems to have horrible abs. Its downright dangerous
