Disable nannies on 2020 4runner

I'm looking at the 2020 4runner and noticed they added some nannies (PCS and LDA). Given that they are the driving distraction, I want to disable them permanently. Or at least have them off until I turn them on.

I've seen several posts on lifts with issues but nothing on turning it off permanently.

Does anyone know of a way to do that? I'm assuming that Techstream can do it, but I can't find the manual (options) otherwise I would RTFM.

Hi Jerold,

There are dedicated buttons on the steering wheel for these. Turned them off and hadn't thought of them since this thread. :)

The Toyota manual says they come back on when the engine starts.

PCS - "The system is automatically enabled each time the engine switch is turned to the “ON” position (vehicles without a smart key system) or the engine switch is turned to IGNITION ON mode (vehicles with a smartkey system)."

LDA - "When the LDA system is turned onor off, operation of the LDA system continues in the same condition the next time the engine is started."

Is this not the case?
 
I turned off my LDA with the button on the steering wheel and it did not reactivate each time I restarted the car. I haven't played with the PCS though.

Turned them off as I left the dealership. I paid a lot of money for these things. Only thing I get benefit of is CarPlay and the bigger screen.
 
There there for a reason. Get a different car.

Jokes aside, I always thought they would return after restarting the engine or whatever.

You can turn off the lane departure, but you can't turn off the front collision warning - only adjust the sensitivity.

I can second this. My LDA has been off for over a month, and I haven't touched the button since that long ago.

I do remember there being sensitivity settings for the LDA in the between the speedometer and tachometer display, but there's a dedicated button to turn it on and off in the lower right of the steering wheel.

The Toyota manual says only the PCS is enabled each time. It says the LDA stays at whatever the last setting was. That is the way mine works. I don't mind the PCS but the LDA has been turned off since I bought mine.
 
The LDA is fairly sensitive, especially toward the passenger side though I leave it on anyway. I dont find it that annoying.

The PCS I left at the default and it's only had a false alarm twice in 6 months and neither time did it try to stop on it's own. There is a step even less sensitive which I haven't tried either.
 
If you want to disable them permanently than maybe look at an older model. Might be able to get a good deal on a 2019. Since they don’t any of that stuff to begin with.

Agreed, mine are off at the press of a button and do not come back on until I press the button again. I leave them off.
 
I started a similar thread a few days ago, because I missed this one…

I've had a couple of rental cars with these "features" and they are certainly very annoying; I especially hate when they try to steer you in a certain direction.

It seems there is a little bit of a disconnect between what the manual says and what actually happens in the vehicle… I guess I should go for a test drive and decide if I'm going to buy new or pre-2020.

The LDA is only a beep and can be turned off via a button on the steering wheel. Luckily it stays off. When it's active, it doesn't interfere with the steering, so it's more of a nag than a nanny. And you can tell the nag to shut up.

Unfortunately the TSS (real nanny) needs to be turned off each time the car starts. It's a series of menu commands.

I have had this come one once where some @&$*$ brake checked me. Sorry no sound. I keep it off so people don't hear me cussing at people like this.

I read the situation long before the TSS activated. When it came on and just beeped at me. Probably because I was already hard on the brakes. At the point the TSS came on it was more startling than the guy in front of me.

Personally, when I drive I focus on the task at hand and find all the beeps and lights distracting. That's just me though. :doh:

How did you get the TSS (PCS) to turn off permanently? My 2020 doesn't do that.

My owner's manual says:
The system is automatically enabled each time the engine switch is
turned to the “ON” position (vehicles without a smart key system) or the
engine switch is turned to IGNITION ON mode (vehicles with a smart
key system).​

However, I can change the timing of the PCS and it will be persistent after the engine is restarted.

The pre-collision warning timing can be changed on (P. 96) of
the multi-information display.
The operation timing setting is retained when the engine switch is
turned off.​
