Disconnect X-RAES without leaking fluid?

I want to say 2007? Not totally sure.

Now what that Tacoma spring thread got me thinking too; I bought a set of Bilstein 5100's for a Tacoma. http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=330723578521&index=2&nav=WATCHING&nid=23150758226
Will that give me more lift? Or is it the same shock? I have way too many factors confusing me haha.

I know I want to run the 5100's regardless. I know I will have the FJ springs up front.

I'm just wondering if the Bilstein's for the taco are the same as the Bilstein's for the 4Runner.

Thank you all for your help and input! :tiphat:
Alex

The 4runner/FJ shocks are the same, but Tacoma shocks are different. Tacoma shocks are most likely valved differently and I know length is different. I don't know enough to say with certainty that they wouldn't work, but my guess is that they would push the limits of the front suspension. They extended longer and compress shorter than the 4runner 5100s. I'm thinking the added travel, without other upgrades, could cause issues such as extreme angles on the CVs.

Here's the impressions from a local member on the 5100/fj setup. His is what made me want them. See post 23(second page) to see my impressions after riding in his. Now more than ever I'm thinking something wasn't right on my 5100/fj setup because my results weren't as positive as others. I've rode in 12Guns `runner and it was much better than mine, no idea why.

Thanks for all the info!

I've made my decision (for the front at least).
I'll use the 5100's up front, set at .85 or 1.75. Still deciding on height because I'm not sure if I want a little rake for when I pull my boat or utility trailer, AND I don't know how much more of a lift the FJ springs will give me.

I think I'll just run with the stock springs and 5100's in the rear. If I feel the ride isn't to my liking, I'll add stiffer springs or whatever...

Thank you for helping me through the selection gauntlet!

Now to make the XREAS fail :D

.... ****. I hope they are the same part numbers.....

I have soooooooooooooooooooo much rust on my undercarriage!

the undercarriage probably has as much rust, if not more rust than most members on here, so even though XREAS has an anticipated lifespan of 80-120k

LOL...I wouldn't get your knickers in a twist over the rust. The rear shock is looking a little rough and maybe your rear axle could use some POR-15 but the front end looks brand new!

For the record, my XREAS has almost 130k no leaks and I disconnected once to install my front spacers.

The front end looks brand new because at that time it had about 20 gallons of PB Blaster on it haha. When it is dry, it looks like a horror show.

Need to get POR-15.

Just found the part number for the front shock I ordered, 24-186711, which summit racing says is for the 4Runner, no mention of the Tacoma haha. I feel relieved.

The rear shocks I ordered, 24-186728, are for the Tacoma at stock ride height. Maybe I'll get a little boost from them?

I'm not worried about the rear shocks as much as I was about the front. But the front is a 4Runner specific shock, thank God.

I would be concerned about the rear shocks. The weight is different so I'm sure the valving is off. From the spec page I'm looking at, it looks like the Tacoma rear shocks aren't compatible with the 4runner. The eye for the lower mount is 19.1mm on the 4runner shock and 12mm on the Tacoma shock. The shock length is also off.
4runner compressed length: 378.88mm
Tacoma compressed length: 356mm
4runner extended length: 597mm
Tacoma extended length: 582.7mm

Oh crap.... Maybe I'll talk to Downsouth Motorsports and see if they would exchange the rear shocks for me.

ASR, you're the freakin man for getting all this info! I really really appreciate it!

Here's to hoping for the best!

Oh...hahaha I'm just waiting for a nice day and I'm going to go to town with POR-15. My hitch looks like its about to crumble into peices lol.

One more suggestion: if you're concerned about body roll a after the swap, you can upgrade the sway bar. I did the sway bar bushing upgrade and it made a difference in body roll and only costs approx $70. Something else I thought about is upgrading to the v8 sway bar. I can't recall anyone who has done this, but the v8 has a bigger sway bar than the v6, which should reduce body roll. Again, not 100% on that but it sounds good in theory. Several guys have removed theirs because it's beneficial off road, you may be able to pick one up at a decent price.

Good theory. I'll see what happens with the bilstein/FJ front coil combo, and I'll see where I should take it from there.

I'm trying to sell my Tacoma rear 5100's but I haven't had any takers just yet :/. I don't want to pay return shipping and a 20% restocking fee. I might end up doing that though. Wish I read the description more closely before I pulled the trigger.. :redbrick:

Is POR-15 a pain to do? I haven't checked it out yet. What kind of prep work is to be done?

It's not too bad, as far as prep work. I'm going to pressure wash the surfaces, give it a quick scuffing with a wire brush/scotchbrite then another little rinse and she'll be ready to paint. I'm not even sure you have to scuff the surface, POR-15 bonds really well, but i'll play things on the safe side. It can be messy tho, so I recommend old cloths and gloves lol.

Good call - From reading the forums I believe the V8 rear sway is 29mm, whereas the V6 is 19mm. I couldn't tell you if it's a direct bolt-on swap or not.

This is for a 3rd gen but it's great info. You can also look into Addco,, I think they make swaybars for the 4th gen as well, not sure on the specs. I don't see any reason the swaybar wouldn't swap from v6 to v8, but I've not tried it or even researched it, just a random thought I had.

So I should paint it on my mom's driveway, not my dad's (where I live).

I might grab some ramps and crawl under there with a pressure washer and a steel brush. Bring it on, rust!

Ok, maybe I'm crazy. I was thinking the v8 had bigger sway bars, but maybe it doesn't. The front is the same, 30mm. The v8 rear is 21mm,, the v6 rear is 19mm. Still may be a good option on the rear. I'd look into the Addco first though.

I think I'll just chain the rear axle! lol

I'll consider bushings and sway bars. I already installed some 1.25" spidertrax to get a wider stance. Like the look with the spidertrax!
