disconnecting hatch speakers

We frequently have the dogs in the cargo area, and don't want them subjected to loud music.

I had the brilliant idea of disconnecting the hatch speakers. I pulled the tailgate lights, and there - in full view - were the wiring connectors for the speakers - which I promptly disconnected.

Not so brilliant :mmph: Now the rear door speakers are dead as well.

How do I silence ONLY the tailgate speakers? No, the party mode switch is not engaged. Rear door speakers were working prior to me disconnecting the tailgate speakers.

Have you tried just fading the sound to the front by using the head unit ?

yes, that works, but sounds pretty one-dimensional. Ideally I'd like only the fronts and rear door speakers running.

If you are that worried about your dogs becoming deaf, how about you just turn down your music when they are in there????

Those speakers are big and loud. The volume can be set low and still be really loud back there. Try this. Set your music at a comfortable level. Then crawl back there. :horn: See what I mean? We don't want deaf dogs, nor is the volume ungodly loud.

I fear if I jumper the hatch speakers to disable them, at some point I'll accidentally push the PM switch and blow up the whole audio system. What wires can be disconnected at the PM switch to make it non-functional, yet allow the audio system to perform normally?

Hi Auntie...,

It's very easy and fool proof: "If you follow the instructions and the theory behind what I've done... it's really easy for a guy like you who 'IMO' thinks very well for yourself!" The PM button does only one thing; it provides a ground circuit to (1) to the L & R speaker configuration relays, and (2) there's an EQ (for lack of a better term) to the HU to make it sound better. Al you want to do is cut the ground wire that goes to the relays, there-by suspending them in their default position and leaving all rear speakers on (wired together in series).

Now no matter what you do to PM the button, nothing will happen the the configuration relays to energize anything! I only wanted the rear door speakers to work for two reasons: they're much closer the the front seat listeners, and the amp puts out more power feeding the two reardoor speakers being only four ohms! ...and plus I have two 15" subwoofers in the cargo area so I can't hear those cheap tailgate speakers anyway, so I hane them jumped over; allowing the door speakers to operate independently of the tail! Thanks, Greg. I did read through both your threads on tweaking party mode, but I misunderstood - I thought cutting the ground wire would keep the PM relays energized. I'd like it to keep PM off, as I've tweaked my audio system with a DSP and don't need or want party mode. (I'll post a write-up later)

I'll give the ground wire and jumpers a try in coming weeks and let you know how it went.

Hey bro,

Don't forget that our 5'th gen 4Runners are predicated on a Switched ground platform, and so when you turn an accessory off, you're killing the GND, not the HOT (POS) circuit! Okay so the PM switch has but one wire (save the Illumin-courtesy circ). When OFF it will not provide a GND to the config relays or the HU EQ circuit (which is why the audio sounds so bad with PM turned off). But when ON, it connects the G-14 GND Junction, which the HU's EQ and L & R config relays depend on for activation! All I did was snap out the PM button (just pulls right out, no screws). There's 1 WHT wire that goes directly to the G-14(?) GND junction, then branches off to both the relays (located in the passenger-side kick panel), and to the HU which you can see: Photos of "Party Mode" wire to be cut

So all I'm doing is Cutting the white wire on the back of the PM button (which disconnects it from the G-14(?) GND junction) so the relays are completely disabled! Then I'm extending it directly to the HU 6 inches away. Cutting that same white wire coming from the G-14 GND junction that goes to the HU, and connecting the white wire from the HU to the PM button! Now you have use of the PM switch wrt the great sounding EQ filter without losing any of the four rear speakers as you did before: "It's a fantastic system now!"

I think I've got it: Disconnect the white wire from the PM switch to kill the EQ relays, then jumper the hatch speakers to kill them. This will give me what I'm looking for - PM disabled and only the rear door speakers active, rather than all four rear speakers. Thanks again.
