Ditching the Center Caps okay?

I crushed one of my center caps on a rock and it shattered. I'm down to four center caps, but I do a five tire rotation. My question is, will ditching the center caps for these rims accelerate any corrosion or wear and tear? My biggest concern is reliability and safety, not looks - though I might paint the bare, rusted metal in the picture a black or green color; would that have ill effects over the years?

I figure it'd be just fine for many years, but wanted to get the collective thoughts...thanks!

I think you'll be fine, I don't run center caps on mine, and I think there's a lot of others who do the same.

Those are just cosmetic.

The caps are just for looks. I broke mine too. As a side note the TRD ones supposedly fit the same and are much shorter so I may pick some of them up and see if I can avoid breaking them this time.

I don't run mine either.

They are decoration only. But if it bothers you, could you swap out the center cap every rotation so the grounded tires have caps and the spare doesn't?

They are only needed on pavement princess 4 Runners like the one my wife drives.

Manly, 4x4 types do not require them.

Right on! Thanks everyone. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't exposing the metal to additional corrosion (road salt, etc). I'm going to remove them, since I had been rotating them with the tires, that's less work.
