DIY Cold Air Intake?

Has anyone made their own cold air intake? Thinking about starting my own project, kits are too expensive nowadays!

Not sure if I want an oiled/dry air filter, but I want to re route the intake so it is allowed easier airflow as well as construct an aluminum box for maximum temperature drop. Also adding an air raid throttle body spacer to the mix.

Anyone have a write up or how they did theirs? Gimme some ideas!!

afe also makes one which is the trd look a like.
intake box with pipe and filter.

k and n also have one but its more open.
no box so it just sucks hot air again thru the engine compartment.

its inverted

im still using a trueflow xdi intake
its a foam type filter with the inverted design.
cant find it anymore i think.

injen is similar in the design, just uses the cotton gauze filter.
 
Aluminum will retain heat way more than plastic, but your the person it has to please so.

Please do some real world testing and get back to us on your results.

In all fairness, aluminum looses heat faster than plastic, and is actually capable of conducting it away from the engine once it absorbs it. For how long is the air running through the intake tube? A second at the max? Not enough time for it to transfer much heat at all, but if you can reduce the length and bends/transitions of the intake and possibly grab air from a cooler spot than factory (the difficult part) then you will still decrease the temperature of the air overall and increase performance which will have a much larger effect than the material of the tube.

Plus shiny aluminum looks way more primo than plastic.

It is just kind of hard for me to believe none of the big companies have picked up on this, but i do have an open mind.
 
Do you have a v6 or v8? I just finished an intake resonator delete on my v8, mostly because I saw this thread and liked the look

I'm not sure if I'm going to paint the engine cover, try to get one from a GX470 and change the logo, or keep it coverless...

Also might heat wrap the intake, again more or less all because I just like the way it looks.

I did a custom "Cold" air intake on my last truck, complete with aluminum air dam, and while it looked okay, I eventually started to dislike the noise, and it never looked good except when i first put it in. With this resonator delete, the added noise is almost negligible, I'm still getting colder air from the fender, and between the pipe, elbows, vacuum fittings and clamps, I spent under $50. I only break $50 if you include the high temp silicone paint I decided to use, and even then just barely.
 
The factory intake is a "cold air intake", but I did customize my factory air box on my V8 if you want ideas check my build.
 
I dyno tested my supercharged 3.4 tacoma with all the aftermarket "cold air intakes" manufactured at the time. This would be in 2009. The dyno results conclusively showed that literally EVERY SINGLE ONE caused the engine to lose between 5-8 horsepower and the K&N drop in filter caused the engine to lose 4 horsepower. This is all dyno proven and we completely removed the filter to be sure, which caused a loss of 2 horsepower. The factory filter provided the most power in all cases.

The design of the factory intake has nothing to do with the volumetric flow of air going into the engine and everything to do with maintaining consistency of the laminar flow of air across the mass air flow sensor to prevent erratic fuel corrections due to low pressure losses caused from turbulence.

I also herd on teh internetz dat da blue intakes make 15hp more than the red intakez dawg! And it hella matchez my spoilerz and fast and furious racing stripez!

I did mine with the biggest air filter i can find and with the TRD pipe for a tundra. Lets just say it felt like my 4runner was on turbo and feel like it can fly off the road any second. A bit weeee too fast for my taste.

Felt like i removed some kind of limiter on the 4runner and unleashed the v8 from within. Problems I had was it revved too fast and wouldnt go past 4. once i hit past that mark, it would shake as if I was reaching the red mark, so unless you don't want to blow out your engine. I would just advise sticking to the aftermarkets.

Also MAF sensor was another biggest issue,I had to start many times to get my 4runner started. Was a pain in the butt. I took it all off and just went back to original. Spent $200 for experimenting when I should have just gotten AFE or Volant.
 
Exchange? K&N for stock intake.

I got a K&N. For my 2018 and like the added horsepower, torque,a don throaty sound/. But, i am now pulling a trailer and want the extra power of the Magnuson SC. The SC requires the stock air box

If you are:

A. In south western Idaho or Eastern Oregon
B. Would like to do a full swap for my K&N for your stock kit

Please PM me.

We could meet at a shop that would charge us each about $100-125 to do the swap.

If you are not local to southwestern Idaho, still PM me, we might be able to arrange anyway.
